Glorious Goodwood 2019 Tips, Odds and Analysis

Quick Tips:

It’s nearly August, and everything is kicking off this summer. We’ve got the heatwave to end all heatwaves, wickets flying in the cricket ahead of the Ashes, the tantalising prospect of the football season returning, and so much more. For fans of quality racing, the good times just don’t seem to end and Glorious Goodwood will take us right into August with a whole stack of great races in the spectacular countryside setting.

What Is Glorious Goodwood?

In case you do need a quick recap – and in this heat, who could blame you? Glorious Goodwood is a five-day Festival that is one of the highlights of the summer horse racing calendar, and also the highlight of Goodwood’s equine year. Day One is headlined by the now Group 1 Goodwood Cup, Day Two by the Sussex Stakes, Day Three (Ladies’ Day) by the Nassau Stakes, Day Four by the Goodwood Mile, and Day Five by the Stewards’ Cup, offering something for everyone. There are also a whole host of races in all categories including a stack of valuable Juvenile contests to boot.

This gives us a bevy of races to look forward to, and it is a week which can offer huge rewards on the betting front. We’ve whittled down the week’s races to find three bets that will hopefully give you a run for your money whilst also offering value too.

Glorious Goodwood Best Bets

One Master, Lennox Stakes

It was a slight surprise to write this. That is not to say that One Master wasn’t a horse worth backing this week – she very much is – but to say that the Sussex Stakes, which looks to be an open renewal this year, would have been a very realistic target. However, William Haggas and connections have left this five-year-old in the Lennox Stakes and she can surely go well there.

It should not be forgotten that she is a Group 1 winner over the trip, taking the Prix de la Foret last October, and she then proved that to be no fluke with a fine fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile afterwards, and she can be forgiven a poor effort in the Hong Kong Mile.

She returned with a satisfactory warm up in the Lanwades Stud Stakes, and was then closing rapidly at the line in the Queen Anne. She was also a fast finishing second in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, when the winner dictated in what was a slowly run race, but both those efforts – along with her two other runs in Group 1 company – give her a really strong chance and she’s got course experience too. The 6/1 offered with 888Sport is an extremely fair price, win or each/way.

Lord Glitters, Sussex Stakes

The Sussex Stakes, which now has Circus Maximus in the field, looks set to be a cracker. This will be the first clash of the elite horses from the classic generation that will meet the best of the elder division, and Lord Glitters might be underestimated by Mr Green offering him at 10/1 for this.

Lord Glitters was a closing third in this last year when given too much to do, and he was only half a length behind Expert Eye (2nd), who would then go onto win the Breeders’ Cup Mile, whilst he was ahead of the useful Gustav Klimt and also Beat The Bank. He got the better of Beat The Bank (sadly departed) in this year’s Queen Anne Stakes, with One Master (since a close second in the Falmouth) third, and Romanised (since a comprehensive winner of the Minstrel Stakes in Ireland) fourth.

Too Darn Hot was impressive in the Prix Jean Prat and is an understandable favourite, but this is a much tougher test in a race that isn’t likely to be so favourable and the 6/5 on him with BetHard doesn’t make much appeal. If anything, the 6/1 offered with Bet365 on Phoenix of Spain appeared to be too big a price amongst the three year olds – he came back sore from Royal Ascot and didn’t run his race there.

What’s The Story, Unibet Handicap

More handicaps are run at Glorious Goodwood than there are standard races, and the opener of the whole week on Tuesday is a typically competitive one. A number of horses make appeal, but What’s The Story could be each-way value at 10/1 with Unibet. Keith Dalgleish’s five-year-old won the Hambleton Handicap from a very wide draw at the Dante Meeting when he got the better of subsequent winner Firmament in good style.

He didn’t match up to that form when he was only 12th in the Royal Hunt Cup but a look through his form suggests that he wouldn’t have appreciated the testing surface there (was also well beaten in the Galway Mile last year, on soft ground, and was fourth in the Hunt Cup last year on fast ground) and it’s no surprise that back on better ground, he posted a strong effort when third in the John Smith’s Cup at York. He was just behind Setting Sail there, who can also go well, and the Hunt Cup winner Afaak was in fifth, which suggests it was a quality renewal of the John Smith’s Cup. He’ll get the fast ground that he relishes once again and looks well handicapped off a mark of 103 given that he won the Hambleton off 100.

The one minor worry would be that he doesn’t have much form on undulating courses like Goodwood, but if he handles the Downs then he could run another very big race, and Unibet are paying four each-way places.

Godolphin have a strong hand with John Smith’s Cup second Setting Sail and the very unexposed Gifts Of Gold, whilst Alan King’s Beringer has run two big races on either side of a flat effort in the Hunt Cup when he too may not have enjoyed the likely testing surface. The booking of Jamie Spencer for Jazeel, who got the better of Beringer by a head, is very interesting move and should be noted.

Have a successful Glorious Goodwood and make sure you search out all the value with our recommended horse racing sites.
