Here's a closer look at some of the potential runners in the 2022 Kim Muir Chase.

Elliott’s All-Out Assault

Gordon Elliott has a strong recent record in this race and he might just improve on it in 2022, because Frontal Assault looked a proper staying chaser in the making in a beginners’ chase at Fairyhouse.

His best hurdles form came in trips of around three miles and the step up in trip for the Kim Muir Chase could unlock more improvement from a horse that has had just three starts over fences, and may have plenty more to offer.

No School Boy Errors

Another leading Irish contender is the Noel Meade-trained School Boy Hours, despite him needing 10 starts to open his account over fences.

His trainer has long felt that this horse has not had much luck but the nine-year-old finally put it all together in a valuable handicap chase at Leopardstown over Christmas.

He clearly handles drying ground well and although he was bumped up 9lb for that Leopardstown win, there is a feeling that he could really kick on now in big staying handicap chases.

Keep an Eye on Rightplacerightime

Emmet Mullins might just be teeing up Rightplacerightime for the Kim Muir Chase and this horse has scope from a handicapping point of view.

He couldn’t quite land a gamble in a hot handicap hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival but it was a run that confirmed his wellbeing and it protected his chase mark ahead of Cheltenham weights being released.

Omar Maretti is a staying chaser on the up for trainer Alex Hales and his jumping was particularly impressive when he ran away with a decent handicap at Catterick in February.

The handicapper could have been harder on him that day but applied just a 5lb rise, so if his trainer can get him freshened up for the Kim Muir Chase, he looks a contender.

Nicky Henderson hasn’t won this race since 2005 but Mister Coffey looks another intriguing entry given he ran in Grade 1 company last time. He was no match for L’Homme Presse in the Scilly Isles Novices' Chase but has been shaping like he could be well-suited to a step up in trip. The Kim Muir was his only festival entry, suggesting connections targeted him at this race.

• Market pointer: Six of the last seven renewals have been won by a horse with a single-figure SP, although only one of those winners went off favourite.
• Avoid last start winners: None of the last 10 Kim Muir Chase winners won their last start before heading to Cheltenham.
• Headgear helps: Unlike most races at the festival, horses wearing headgear have a decent recent record, winning nine of the last 10 editions.
• Weighty matters: The last 13 winners have carried more than 11st and the last three victors carried 11st 8lb or more.
• Steer clear of prolific winners: No winner in the last decade had won more than two handicap chases.
• Avoid French-bred contenders: Of the 40+ French-bred horses that have run in the race in the last decade, only three have hit the frame. None have won.
