League of Legends Worlds 2018: Betting Tips for the Group Stage
- Phong Vũ Buffalo to draw first blood against G2 - 11/10 at Bet-at-Home
Big eSports tournaments keep coming and it's now time for League of Legends betting fans to salivate over the World Championship. Sixteen teams remain when the teams arrive in Busan to fight for a spot in the play-offs in one of the most prestigious eSport-tournaments of the year. To win Worlds is the greatest achievement for any LoL-player.
The Asian teams, mainly from South Korea and China, are heavy favourites to advance to the next stage, as per usual. But there’s still some hope for the Western teams. We’ll take a closer look at potential upsets, specific match-ups and where to best place your bets during the group stage.
Vitality – Cloud9: Must-Win for Both Teams
If there’s any group that will be tough for the Western teams it’s group B where we find the European Vitality and the American Cloud9. They’ll face off against Chinese RNG and Korean Gen.G and both of these Asian titans are likely candidates to take home the whole tournament as they’ve looked really strong during seasonal play.
This match is a must-win in other words if any of them wants even the slightest chance to advance any further. The top eSports bookmakers holds Cloud9 as slight favourites but they looked very shaky against Gambit during their play-in series and the journey could’ve ended there already.
Both teams have a similar playstyle with a strong early-game and Vitality seems to be somewhat underestimated in the match-up. They had a very strong finish to the Summer-split in EU LCS and managed to grab the third-place in the split. Judging by the statistics Vitality have had a stronger early-game than Cloud9 and therefore a bet on an outright Vitality victory at 1/1 with Karamba is a solid choice.
As you’ve probably picked up on already the early-game will probably be the key to winning this match and Vitality needs a good start if they want to win. Something interesting to consider ahead of this match is that the correlation between grabbing the first blood and winning the game is very high for Vitality.
With that in mind you could spice up your bet if you prefer higher odds. Betway offers 2/1 for Vitality to take first blood and the game. It adds another risk of course but could really be worthwhile to consider for this specific team.
Flash Wolves to Win Group A
Group A is definitely the most erratic group with the highest chance of upsets. Though both Afreeca Freecs and Flash Wolves are still heavy favourites to advance out of the group. But there’s certainly a chance for G2 to grab a spot if they play to their potential.
South Korean Afreeca Freecs are most likely to win the group according to Betway’s 4/9, but the chances for an upset here are quite high. The Koreans have been very up-and-down in the LCK and it remains to be seen what form they’re in at Worlds, they’ll need a good showing if they’re to beat Flash Wolves.
The Taiwanese Flash Wolves’ dominance in LMS is indisputable, they went undefeated through the whole Summer-split, though the region is of course weaker than the Korean one. Flash Wolves’ also had a very impressive run at MSI last time around, where Betty showed what a world-class player he is.
Considering how strong Flash Wolves’ have looked both internationally and domestically during the last six months, it’s somewhat surprising that the odds of them winning the group are so generous. Flash Wolves winning the group is available for 11/4 at Bet365, which is a very tempting prospect.
G2 to Lose First Blood Against Phong Vũ Buffalo
A recurring bet which has yielded great success during the Summer-split of EU LCS is to bet against G2 when it comes to first blood. G2 tends to not group up early on and instead spread out and put pressure on the map and focus on getting an early CS lead. They evoke a reactionary playstyle in the early-game and try to punish the other team’s attempt at first blood.
As a result of this they ended the season in eighth place in the first blood statistic at 45% in the EU LCS, which is very uncommon for a top team. Vietnamese Phong Vũ Buffalo has a much better first blood rate at 71% and despite them playing in a weaker region, the numbers indicate a much more proactive playstyle in the early-game.
Consequently a bet against G2 is once again recommended. Bet-at-home offers 11/10 for Phong Vũ Buffalo to draw first blood.
