Odds on the Next Premier League Manager to Leave

SHARE

The short-lived service of football managers at the highest level seems to be a trend in recent years. With the New Year approaching, it's remarkable that not one Premier League manager has resigned or been sacked.

Reading’s Nigel Adkins is the latest manager to lose his job in English league football, and it's almost inevitable that a top flight casualty will soon follow. The question is: who will be the first Premier League manager to leave their post?

Leicester’s Nigel Pearson is the current favourite to leave, best priced at 3/1 with Betfair Sports at the time of writing, with his side rooted to the bottom of the table. He is closely followed by Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who is currently 10/3 with Betfair, after the Reds were knocked out of the Champions League and are sitting 11th in the table.

While rumours of Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp being lined up to replace Rodgers at Anfield circulate, Pearson was recently charged by the FA for using insulting words towards a spectator. Most Foxes fans, however, are happy to keep faith with the man who won them the Championship last season – for now at least.

West Brom’s Alan Irvine is the third favourite to go according to the bookies, currently best priced at 9/2 with Coral Sports, but pressure on the Albion boss has been relieved somewhat after their derby victory over Aston Villa. Hull boss Steve Bruce has snuck under the radar, but with the club second from bottom, owner Assem Allam’s patience could begin to waver. Bruce is 10/1 with Coral Sports now, while QPR’s Harry Redknapp is 16/1, with his side third from bottom.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock, Aston Villa's Paul Lambert, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger are all currently 20/1 to get the boot, with Sunderland’s Gus Poyet and Burnley’s Sean Dyche at 25/1. Jose Mourinho’s job at Chelsea is deemed the safest seat in the league, while the early season favourite to leave his post first, Newcastle’s Alan Pardew, is now sitting pretty at 66/1 at the time of writing, following wins over Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool.

The odds are ever changing, a bit like the wavering loyalties of fickle fans and temperamental owners. Form-wise, Bruce, Irvine, Lambert, Poyet and Warnock have all failed to win more than two out of their last ten league matches and represent reasonable value. Monk, Hughes and Dyche are outside options, with only three wins from their last ten. Nigel Pearson’s Leicester has won none.
