Did Trends Win Last Year's Champion Hurdle?

On the trends last year, the Champion Hurdle shortlist consisted of Buveur D’Air, Faugheen, Melon and Mick Jazz - three of that foursome filling the podium in the Cheltenham Festival's first championship race.

Buveur D’Air and Faugheen were the best scorers on the Champion Hurdle trends, with Melon and Mick Jazz not far behind. The odds-on Cheltenham betting favourite Buveur D’Air, Faugheen, Mick Jazz and Melon had all hit the frame in at least one of the four ‘Key Race Trends' (see below) contests.

Buveur D’Air, Faugheen and Melon were all positives in the ‘Place Trends' (see below) of the Champion Hurdle, while all three were trained by Nicky Henderson or Willie Mullins who have won five of the last six renewals.

How Buveur D'Air Won 2018's Champion Hurdle

Last season, Nicky Henderson saddled Buveur D'Air to become the first horse to win back-to-back Champion Hurdles since Hardy Eustace in 2005.

In the final week leading up to the Cheltenham Festival 2018 Henderson had been forced to rule out stable stars Top Notch, We Have A Dream and On The Blind Side and scratch My Tent Or Yours on the day of racing, plus endure a late injury scare for Altior.

    3.30 CHELTENHAM – 2018 CHAMPION HURDLE RESULT

    1. Buveur D’Air 4/6f
    2. Melon 7/1
    3. Mick Jazz 25/1

But Buveur D'Air did no miss a beat, finding extra close home to deny the gutsy Melon by the most valuable of necks.

It may have been a different story, had Melon not found trouble in-running after three out when mounting a challenge. The Willie Mullins-trained contender can be considered, by some, an unlucky loser and will surely return to set the record straight - whatever that may mean.

The unfancied Mick Jazz stayed on for third, having been held up for the majority of the race. He rewarded each-way backers at 25/1 as Buveur D'Air delivered a seventh Champion Hurdle to the race's most successful trainer.
