Did Trends Win Last Year's Pertemps Handicap Hurdle?

On the Pertemps Final trends last year, a shortlist of four found only the first and second, in a notoriously tricky Cheltenham Festival betting heat.

Fitting particularly well into the 10-year-trends was winner Delta Work, who had run up to Graade 2 levcel as a novice that season, without winning and had run in two handicap hurdles without winning.

Half of the last 10 winners of the Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle had never won a handicap hurdle before, the remainder winning no more than two. This is a key trend to follow, and one that applied to second Glenloe, and the unplaced trends picks Lovenormoney and Theo's Charm.

The final horse on the trends shortlist was unplaced Mine Now, who although a lot older than the majority of the last 15 winners at 10, looked a good fit for the placed trends, with four handicap hurdle wins, including last time out.

How Delta Work won 2018’s Pertemps Final

With two declared for the race, trainer Gordon Elliott produced a pair of aces in Glenloe and Delta Work, who fought out a nail-biting finish under two of the weigh-rooms greatest.

The winner, Delta Work, was sent off at 6/1 for Gigginstown House Stud, Davy Russell in the saddle and on-course to be crowned the Cheltenham Festival's leading jockey of 2018.

2.10 CHELTNENHAM - 2018 Pertemps Final Result

  1. Delta Work 6/1
  2. Glenloe 9/2f
  3. Connetable 33/1
  4. Taj Badalandabad 40/1

He was held up in the early stages, as Glenloe - 9/2 favourite for JP McManus and jockey Barry Geraghty - took a more prominent position, but the pair timed their runs identically, pressing go two hurdles out and taking the lead at the last.

Travelling well, the French-bred Delta Work came through despite being hampered, as four warriors approached that last flight. Who Dares Wins, Connetable, Delta Work and Glenloe jumped in unison.

The two jockeys, at the top of their game, jousted in a battle royal up the hill, Russell outpointing Geraghty by merely a nose at the line, the Paul Nicholls-trained Connetable almost three lengths back in third.
