What Is The Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy?
The Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy is a 6f Listed test for juveniles, worth £175,000. To qualify, the two-year-old’s sire must have sold at least one yearling at the main Flat bred and mixed public auction sales in Europe or North America last year.
The weights are then framed in two ways:
- Penalties for winning Listed or Group races
- Allowances based on sire’s median yearling price
So, your horse gets weight added on if they win pattern races, and they get weight taken off if their siblings haven’t been particularly popular - the punter’s job is to find the horses in the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy betting who are worth more than their weight.
Most of these juveniles have official ratings, the number that would be used to give them a weight in a handicap. Of them, Swissterious and Vintage Brut have by far the highest, ranked 101. But due to allowances and penalties, Vintage Brut carries 3lbs less than his equal Swissterious.
He comes into the race as one of the most experienced runners, having run seven times. Trained by Tim Easterby, he’s been on the go since an impressive debut victory at Thirsk over 5f in April, and won in Listed company at Sandown in the spring.
Good runs in Group company followed, most notably when beaten three lengths into fourth at Goodwood in early August. Yes, he is vulnerable to some of his less exposed rivals, but he is really well-suited by the conditions of this race.
Despite getting a 3lb penalty for his Listed win, he carries 7lb less than the standard 9st 2lb for males because his sire’s yearling sales values are in the second lowest bracket. That means he gets a weight allowance of 10lbs!
The Second Favourite
She improved to win a £1480,000 sales race at York last time out, stepped up to 6f for the first time, and won’t be hindered by Saturday’s massive field of 23 runners on that running. She saw off 19 rivals from off the pace that day, but this looks a tougher test and she’s not helped by her popular sire, Kyllachy.
The maximum median yearling sales price to fit into the allowances is £27,300, but Kyllachy’s 2017 yearlings established a median of £30,000. It’s also notable that the form of that York victory could be working out better, and it is likely that she will find a few too good, as was the case when finishing 10th in the Super Sprint over 5f at Newbury in July.
Take This Gamble:
Trainer Keith Dalgleish saddles three of the 23 runners declared and the least experienced of them all would also appear to be his strongest chance.
Summer Daydream made an impressive start to her career when winning by four and a half lengths in a heavy ground 6f novice event at Carlisle last month. She quickly stepped up to Group 3 company, finishing fifth over the same distance at Ayr two weeks ago.
She has only run twice, and therefore doesn’t have an official rating, but she finishing amongst those rated 90-100 at Ayr and soundly beat the 71-rated Musical Sky at Carlisle. She also gets a 2lb allowance for her sire’s sales prices.
The underfoot conditions forecast here are the concern as she’s never run on anything but slow, but she is by Footstepsinthesand, whose progeny traditionally have no issues with fast ground, and is out of a mare who was placed on firm going as a two-year-old. At a stand-out 16/1 with Paddy Power, she looks an each-way option.
Follow Hannon Tip
Trainer Richard Hannon is reknown for his ability to train two-year-olds and he won the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy three years ago with Dark Angel colt Log Out Island.
This time he runs the maiden Beat Le Bon, who showed up well when runner-up in a 7f novice contest at Newbury on his debut in July. Sent off favourite for a conditions race next time out, he weakened late on into third.
That was over a mile though and this drop back in distance is likely to suit. It’s interesting given the stables strong hand in juvenile races, that they have opted to run a maiden in this highly competitive Listed affair. That could be a tip in itself so consider the potentially generous 14/1 offered by Coral.
