Rio Olympics 2016: The Best Events to Bet On

The 2016 Summer Olympics begins in Rio de Janeiro this week and sports fans will be licking their lips at the feast that's on offer. But with 306 events taking place across 28 sports and more countries taking part than ever before, it may be difficult to know where to start when it comes to betting on the games.

Below you'll find some of the top events to bet on, along with a guide to the main contenders in each one. Understanding which events to bet and who's worth betting on throughout all Olympics could save you from a summer of heartbreak.

Tennis | Men’s Singles

These days, the Olympics is regarded as a prestigious title in tennis. This year, the world’s best will be battling for gold in Rio. Andy Murray was the winner in London in 2012 and having rested himself since his Wimbledon victory last month, he will be raring to go in Brazil.

He is 9/4 with NetBet to defend his title, second favourite behind world number one Novak Djokovic. The Serb is missing an Olympic gold medal from his collection and is backed at 8/11 by Betway.

Roger Federer has sadly had to pull out of the event due to injury, with Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic also not taking part. One man who will be there, though, is Rafael Nadal, who has missed much of this season due to injury.

The Spaniard is 14/1 with NetBet to make a winning comeback. If you fancy a longer shot, Paddy Power is offering generous odds of 66/1 on world number ten Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to claim gold for France.

Track | Men’s 100m

The men’s 100m race is always a highlight of the Olympics, although British fans will have to stay up pretty late if they want to catch this year’s event live – the race takes place at 2:25am on a Monday morning.

Usain Bolt continues to dominate the field and is attempting to become the first man to win three back-to-back Olympic 100m titles. The Jamaican is best-priced at 8/13, with Justin Gatlin – the fastest man in the world this year – a close second favourite at 2/1 with Ladbrokes.

Of course, it's not known yet who will be running in the final, but Yohan Blake (16/1 with Ladbrokes) and Travyon Bromell (14/1 with bet365) are also likely to be among the medals.

Cycling | Women’s Team Pursuit

Great Britain has dominated the velodrome at the last two Olympics and will certainly be expecting to pick up a few medals in Rio, although Team GB is unlikely to be as successful as it was in London four years ago.

The women’s team pursuit looks to be one of the most hotly contested events on the track. The USA is the bookies’ favourite at 5/6 with NetBet, while the British team, led by London 2012 star Laura Trott, are 5/2 with William Hill to defend their title.

Australia is another that's always strong on the track and they are 7/1 with bet365 in this event. 2012 bronze medallists Canada are a longer shot, with odds of 18/1 at Paddy Power.

Heptathlon | Women's Event

Another event that British fans will be keeping a close eye on is the women’s heptathlon, in which Jessica Ennis-Hill will be attempting to reclaim the gold medal she won in London. The 30 year-old has had a baby since then, went on to win the World Championships last year and is the favourite in Rio at 6/4 with bet365.

Ennis-Hill’s main challengers for the gold will be Canadian Brianne Theisen-Eaton and fellow Brit Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Theisen-Eaton is the reigning Commonwealth Games champion and is 3/1 with Ladbrokes, while the younger Johnson-Thompson is 9/4 with Betfair to dethrone Ennis-Hill.

Laura Ikauniece-Admidina, who won bronze at the World Championships, is an outside bet at 12/1 with Paddy Power. Sadly, no bookies are offering odds on the winner having a double-barrelled surname.

Swimming | Men’s 100m Butterfly

The pool always provides great excitement at the games and the men’s 100m butterfly race sees two of the sport’s greatest rivals, Michael Phelps and Chad Le Clos, go head-to-head. Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time, but at the age of 31, can he add more medals to his collection?

The American is the favourite in this race at 11/10 with Ladbrokes, with Le Clos best-priced at 21/10 with Betway. Beyond Phelps and Le Clos, Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh, another veteran of the pool, is 9/2 with NetBet to take home the gold medal.

If you want to back youth over experience, 21-year-old Joseph Schooling, who won silver in this event at the Commonwealth Games, is 15/1 with 32Red. For hundreds of markets on Rio 2016, head to bet365 today!
