Did Trends Win Last Year's Ryanair Chase?

On the trends last year, the Ryanair Chase shortlist, there was just one name: Un De Sceaux - the reigning champion and overwhelming Cheltenham Races favourite.

He had secured his second Cheltenham Festival victory in the 2017 Ryanair Chase, and had gone on to win the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase for a third time the following January, that race featuring among our 'Key Race Trends' (see below).

There was only one other Grade 1 winner in the field - Cue Card - and Un De Sceaux was the only runner in the six-strong line up that had won a Grade 1 that season. His rivals had won nothing but handicaps in the past six months, and he was rated upwards of 2lbs superior to all five challengers.

But the closest of those on ratings were the winner Balko Des Flos, and 2013 winner Cue Card, who at his best was rated 176, a dizzying height no other runner had ever reached.

How Balko Des Flos Won 2018's Ryanair Chase

It was a day when everything fell into place for Balko Des Flos as the seven-year-old cruised to a shock 8/1 victory over odds-on favourite Un De Sceaux in the Ryanair Chase.

A year previously he had been a front-running 16/1 shot in the JLT Novices' Chase, falling four fences from home and consigning himself to a life in handicaps.

However, two races into that new career, he landed the €250,000 Galway Plate off a rating of 146, catapulting him back into the realms of the elite, where he quietly racked up placings in Grade 2 company, before finishing second in the Grade 1 Savills Chase at Leopardstown at odds of 66/1.

2.50 CHELTENHAM - 2018 RYANAIR CHASE RESULT

  1. Balko Des Flos 8/1
  2. Un De Sceaux 8/11 fav

The Henry De Bromhead-trained star was under-rated that day, and again on Ryanair Chase day, but under a cool ride by jockey Davy Russell, he travelled supremely through the 2m5f Grade 1, overtaking leader Un De Sceaux three fences out and pulling further, and further, clear.

Balko Des Flos won his first Grade 1 and his first Festival race by four and a half lengths, from Un De Sceaux, and Cloudy Dream, the previous year's second Sub Lieutenant back in fourth and Cue Card failing to finish.
