Target the Goals Markets for Liverpool vs Manchester City

This weekend’s big match in terms of Premier League betting sees Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield. These are two of the most in-form and entertaining sides in the division, so there are plenty of markets for punters to consider when placing their bets on the match, and even more opportunity to find value.

Liverpool will be looking to avenge their 5-0 thrashing in the reverse fixture in September, while City will be out to maintain their huge lead at the top of the Premier League. It promises to be a cracker, but which way do the bookies see it going? Get the lowdown in our betting preview!

City Fancied To Come Through Tough Test

It may only be the start of January but most Premier League fans, pundits and even rival managers have conceded that the trophy is heading back to the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side have been simply supreme this season, collecting 62 points from a possible 66 – 15 more than nearest challengers Manchester United.

They’re looking to replicate Arsenal’s achievement in the 2003/04 season of winning the Premier League title without losing a single game, and are well on their way to doing that. In fact, they recently won 15 games in a row before their run was halted by a 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace over Christmas.

The Citizens are favourites to win every game they play in at the moment and this one is no different, despite a trip to Anfield being, on paper, one of their tougher assignments. Punters can still get odds against, though, with Betfair currently pricing City at odds of 5/4 to win on Sunday.

Reds Only Slight Outsiders

That said, Liverpool aren’t exactly a long shot with the top bookies. They may have been thrashed 5-0 the last time these two met, but they go into the rematch in excellent form. Jürgen Klopp’s men are unbeaten in their last 13 league games, winning 4 of the last 5, and they’ve not lost at home in any competition since April.

They’ll also have the advantage of extra rest over the visitors, a potential major factor in this game. The Reds won’t have played since beating Merseyside rivals Everton in the FA Cup last Friday, while City’s FA Cup tie was on Saturday before an EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Bristol City on Tuesday.

Yes, City’s squad is big and strong enough to cope with such a hectic schedule, but that is a factor to consider. The bookies clearly think Liverpool are capable of inflicting a first defeat of the season on City, with the hosts best-priced at 23/10 with bet365. Alternatively they’re 5/4 in the Draw No Bet market, while a draw itself is the longest-priced result at odds of 29/10 with Black Type.

Goals Guaranteed

Liverpool and Manchester City are the two highest-scoring teams in the Premier League so far this season, so it’s safe to say that a 0-0 draw is extremely unlikely. We suggest avoiding this market. City have registered a whopping 64 goals in their 22 matches, while the Reds have scored a very respectable 50 goals so far.

As mentioned, there were five goals in the reverse fixture at the Etihad and the bookies are expecting plenty of goals again, although they should be more spread out. William Hill’s odds of 11/8 on over 3.5 goals look appealing, but there’s little value to be had in both teams to score at 4/9 with many sites.

Mo Salah or No Salah?

Just how many goals there’ll be could depend heavily on whether Mohamed Salah is fit for Liverpool. The Egyptian winger is currently the second-highest scorer in the Premier League with 17 goals, but he’s missed the last two games through injury. There’s a good chance he’ll be back for this one, though.

The fantasy football favourite is worth keeping an eye on in the anytime goalscorer stakes, where he’s currently priced at 13/8 with Paddy Power. If Salah doesn’t make it, there could be value to be found in the win-to-nil market.

Guardiola’s side have conceded just five goals in their last 12 away league matches and are an appealing 4/1 with several online sports betting sites to win and keep a clean sheet at Anfield. Injuries are also a factor in the City side at the moment. With Gabriel Jesus sidelined, Sergio Aguero is currently a nailed-on starter up front.

The Argentinian striker has netted four goals in City’s last six league outings and is 17/4 with Unibet to open the scoring in this contest.
