Top 7 Horses to Place Money on in the 2018 Grand National

Top 7 Horses to Place Money on in the 2018 Grand National

By Richie Delaney | Horse Racing, Grand National | April 10th, 2018

For punters the world over, Grand National betting is just around the corner and the exact same question as always is pressed on horse racing fans’ lips - who’s going to take home the win at Aintree Racecourse? To call this year's edition of the Grand National a big deal would be a massive understatement, a fact backed up by the array of incredible horses that will be running on the day.

The race has grown in popularity year after year, with dedicated horse racing bettors and casual partakers alike salivating over the prospect of a big winner netting them some cash. In fact, the Grand National is the most bet on horse racing event of the year in the UK and Ireland - a testament to its truly exciting nature.

So, if you’re not happy with the horse you drew in the office sweepstakes read on, because we’ve compiled a list of our favourite 7 competing in this year’s race from the top online horse racing sites - all of which are available to be bet on right now:

  1. Regal Encore [25/1 at Genting Bet]

It is not inconceivable that Anthony Honeyball could saddle a winner at Aintree this year. Regal Encore is the horse affording him that opportunity. The 10 year old was his first ever runner in the Grand National 12 months ago where he finished a not to be sniffed at eighth. A return to the Merseyside course was always on the cards and if you think he can do the deed Genting Bet are currently offering him at 25/1.

  2. Vicente [20/1 at Paddy Power]

Paul Nicholls’ yard has won the Grand National once before in 2012. Vicente is now 9 years old and may be remembered by some punters as getting no further than the first fence at last year’s race. The reason he makes this list however is because he won the Scottish version of the National after that significant fall and ran excellently throughout the remainder of 2017. Paddy Power is offering the 9-year old at 20/1 odds.

  3. Pleasant Company [28/1 at BetBright]

If you’re looking to stray away from the favourites and try something tricky for this year’s Grand National, Pleasant Company could be well worth a shot. Although his form hasn’t been impeccable of late, he is W.P Mullins trained. His starting odds when ridden by P.Townend in January at Gowran Park were 8/1 and he is lightly raced with a high level of recent form. Pleasant Company should do the distance and is worth a punt - but only if you think he can outrun Anibale Fly. You can get him at 28/1 with BetBright at the time of writing.

  4. Total Recall [10/1 at Ladbrokes]

Total Recall is another Mullins trained horse. He’s been the talk of the town when it comes to the Grand National over the past couple of months, with many expecting him have entered single digits. His odds of 10/1 listed at Ladbrokes sportsbook may not seem appetising with a race choc full of 33/1 shots but he's a strong competitor and a worthy punt for the Grand National.

  5. The Last Samuri [16/1 with Sportnation]

The Last Samuri is no stranger to Grand Nationals. He was runner-up in 2016 and has no problems with the fences, something even the most seasoned of horses can struggle with. He’s had four runs throughout the season prior to the big day at Aintree. His performances have excellent, but he hasn’t won. The problem with him however, is pace. He should get around no issue, but one or two others might just nick it ahead of him. If you still fancy him you can get him at 16/1 with Sportnation.

  6. Minella Rocco [18/1 with Matchbook]

This JP McManus contender was runner-up in the 2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup and has endured an uneven season this year. He finished fourth in a Grade 3 at Punchestown and was pulled up at Cheltenham in November. He fell last at the Irish Gold Cup and has since been off the track and underwent wind surgery. Native River, this year’s Gold Cup winner was beaten by Minella Rocco at Cheltenham last year, so assuming that he’s healthy come start time he could be a decent shout for a surprising win. Matchbook is offering odds of 18/1 on this contender to win it all.

  7. Tiger Roll [8/1 with Coral]

There’s a reason that Tiger Roll is amongst the favourites for a Grand National win. He had an incredible Cheltenham festival, including a commanding win (with a starting price of 7/1) in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase on the second day. Carrying just 10stone 12lbs, the Gordon Elliott owned horse is poised well for a victory at Aintree. If you think he can do it, Coral are offering him at 8/1 for first place.
