Which Player Should Punters Back for the ATP World Tour Finals?

The 2016 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, taking place between 13-20 November, will see the world’s tennis elite battle it out at the O2 Arena in London. Gathered from the Association of Tennis Professionals rankings, these eight world-class players will try and ace their way to a place in the final to be crowned this year’s champion.
With stakes this high, online betting sites are falling over themselves to offer you the best bets and exclusive promotions on the top tennis markets. After taking a look at this break down of some of the best bets available from the top bookies around the world, which star-player will you back?
Who are the Bookies Backing?
The bookies have Novak Djokovic painted as the clear winner, with online bookmaker bet365 offering odds of 1/9 on the Serbian superstar. Djokovic has won the ATP Finals for the last four years running, so it’s natural that he remains the star of the show.
This year, however, he’ll be driven by the challenge of winning his sixth overall ATP Final Championship, which would match the record set by Swiss player Roger Federer in 2011, when he beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Will the pressure be too much?
Second favourite for bookies is the world’s new No.1 ranked player, Scotsman Andy Murray. He’s currently attracting odds of 1/4. Murray will be out to prove himself worthy of the No.1 rank, having recently usurped it from his main rival Djokovic.
He has yet to win an ATP End of Year Championship, but with another Wimbledon title under his belt this year, he must be feeling confident about playing in London again. One thing to note – Murray favours grass surfaces rather than the hard indoor courts of the O2 Arena, which may be why the bookies are sticking with Djokovic.
What Matchup Should the Punters Look At?
Djokovic’s first game is against Austrian player Dominic Thiem. The youngster, aged just 23, has won seven singles titles on the ATP Tour, four of which were won this year. Currently ranked No.7 in the world, the aggressively defensive player could certainly cause an upset for Djokovic, especially with his signature single-handed backhand.
However, like Murray, he wins more on grass than he does on hard surfaces, winning only two thirds of his hard court games this year. Another solid pairing is between Swiss player Stanislas "Stan" Wawrinka and Japan’s Kei Nishikori. Currently ranked No.3 in the world, Wawrinka is attracting even odds at bet365, largely thanks to his US Open win this year where he managed to beat Djokovic over four sets in the final.
He also defeated Nishikori in the semi-finals of the same tournament, again in four sets. Nishikori will no doubt be looking to return the favour and finally get a chance to compete against Murray or Djokovic on the world stage. He has been given slightly longer odds at 4/5, which may be a worthwhile bet.
Best Bets of ATP World Tour Finals
Some of the more intriguing bets this year lie in the details of the matches themselves. bet365 is offering odds of 2/1 that there will be a tie break in the opening match between Djokovic and Thiem. If you’re looking for high-stake odds, then the double result bets might be in more in your ball court.
The online bookmaker is offering odds of 6/1 that Thiem will both win the first set and the match, as well as 7/1 odds that he will win the first set but lose the match. Look out for the 2-Way Match Handicap bet, which also has some interesting odds.
In Murray’s opening match against Croatian player Marin Cilic, it’s odds of 8/11 on that the Scots champion starts out with a handicap of -3.5. In the reversal of that bet, where Cilic has a 3.5 handicap over Murray to begin with, he’s sitting at 1/1 odds. Another bet that’s worth a punt in this fixture is the 'Games in the First Set'.
The odds of the total games being under 9.5 is evens; if it goes over, it’s 8/11. If you’re confident in the total number of games that’ll be played in the entire match, why not take a shot at it? If you take the game between Milos Raonic and Gael Monfils, odds for the total number of games being below 23 is 11/10, but between 23 to 25 it jumps to 9/2.
If you think it may stretch to over 25 games, then you’re looking at smaller odds of 6/5. If you think you’re an ace at tennis betting and know just which player will be smashing their way to success at the O2 Arena, why not visit bet365 today to place a punt on it?
