Who Will Headline Saturday and Sunday at Glastonbury 2019?
- Elton John to headline Glastonbury 2019 – 10/1 with Betway
- The Cure to headline Glastonbury 2019 – 1/1 with Betway
Tickets for Glastonbury 2019 may have sold out in just over half an hour, but festival goers still only know one act who will headline next summer’s event.
Following weeks of rumours, British grime sensation Stormzy was confirmed – by Glastonbury partners Oxfam – as Friday night’s headliner, one of three artists who will top the lineup, which is not expected to be fully announced until Spring.
Taking place from June 26-30, punters have otherwise been left to feed off the scraps of speculation linking a wide range of acts with the much-coveted Pyramid Stage headline slots, which close out each night.
So, with a wide-open field and little knowledge in the public domain, who do the bookmakers believe will most likely fill the Saturday and Sunday slots?
Profile: Does the former Beatle really need an introduction? As one of the most famous men on the planet, no he doesn’t.
But for the record, the 76-year-old is a two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of The Beatles and as a solo artist, and has accumulated a remarkable 22 number one albums over the course of his career. Enough said.
Why Glastonbury? Not only is McCartney one of if not thee greatest ambassador to music, he’s also an activist who has dedicated a lot of time and money to international charities, which is right up Glastonbury’s street.
Profile: Call it post-punk, gothic rock, alternative rock – whatever you prefer, but there’s no debating the legacy of The Cure. The British band’s worldwide commercial success in the 1980s in particular helped influence bands in the proceeding decades, such as The Smashing Pumpkins in the 1990s and Interpol in the 2000s.
Regarded as the first alternative rock band to have broken into the mainstream, they have managed to retain a large fanbase since their 80s heyday and continue to sell out large shows worldwide in the present day, albeit with a string of personnel changes around frontman Robert Smith.
Why Glastonbury? Although they have a hardcore following, they also boast a string of very recognisable, crowd-pleasing anthems such as Friday I’m In Love, The Lovecats and Just Like Heaven – perfect for the largely ignorant Glastonbury audience. There’s a notable gap in their 2019 summer tour of Europe with both June 29 and June 30 seemingly free, and ‘more to be added’ soon states their website.
Profile: Once derided for his foulmouthed outbursts and supposed arrogance, the British public has since warmed to Liam Gallagher, thanks largely to his endlessly entertaining Twitter feed.
After experimenting to mixed success with Beady Eye, the former Oasis frontman now performs under his own name and was nominated for Best Live Band at the 2018 Q Awards, which will have done his Glastonbury headliner hopes no harm at all.
Why Glastonbury? Along with his sibling Noel, the Gallagher brothers are synonymous with Glasto having helped raised the profile of the festival with numerous appearances in their 1990s pomp.
But be weary of betting on Liam Gallagher’s odds, as it will only be a winner if he headlines as a solo artist – an Oasis reunion would mean a losing bet, although by all accounts that dream scenario is unlikely.
Profile: Having won seven Brit Awards and a Mercury Prize, Arctic Monkeys are no longer just the first band to come to prominence via the internet, although they did have an enormous impact on the music industry in that sense.
After six best-selling albums, the first of which is the fastest selling debut in the UK on the back of a reputation built online, they’re firmly established as one of Britain’s biggest bands and are arguably more qualified to headline Glastonbury now than they have been in the past.
Why Glastonbury? Having already headlined the festival in 2007 and again in 2013, their connection to Glasto is strong. However, will regular Glastonbury goers want to see them again?
Perhaps not, which might explain their slightly longer odds. We suspect they might be an easier option for the organisers should they fail to land their top targets.
Profile: One of the biggest selling artists in the world with some 300m million sales, Elton John is another man on this list who barely needs an introduction. But for the purposes of consistency, we’ll proceed.
Having been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, Elton’s achievements are so vast that his early career is to be portrayed in a film titled Rocketman. With a scheduled release date of May 31, 2019 – a month before Glastonbury – hype is set to be feverishly high, which makes him a good outside bet to headline.
Why Glastonbury? In a 2016 interview with BBC, Elton John claimed he’d never been asked to headline the famous Glastonbury in over four decades of touring.
Aided by an appearance in a Christmas advert promoting high-end department store John Lewis, an annual commercial Britain enjoys an unusual love affair with, plus the upcoming release of Rocketman, demand for Elton John to headline is higher than ever. Maybe now’s the time to finally ask?
