Kofi Kingston is embarking on arguably the biggest singles match of his career so far. The SmackDown superstar is challenging Daniel Bryan for the WWE championship at Fastlane on March 10 from Cleveland. It’s an unexpected opportunity that came for the veteran competitor, who has enjoyed a career resurgence over the last few weeks.
For WWE betting fans, bookmakers have established Bryan as a -625 favorite and Kingston a +350 underdog.
The organic meteoric rise of Kingston is welcome by fans who enjoy attaching themselves to an underdog. Perhaps, the decision-makers in the back took a second a look at him given the overwhelmingly positive reaction.
This history leads into the final PPV stop on the road to WrestleMania . Kingston was given a one-on-one match against the “Planet’s Champion.” #KofiMania has been a popular hashtag, but the question remains will WWE change course from a plan that Kingston was not in the cards.
His ascension started when the New Day member was announced as the replacement for Mustafa Ali in the WWE championship Elimination Chamber match. He made believers out of many audiences thanks to an incredible showing in the gauntlet match on the SmackDown Live leading up to the Pay-Per-View.
The inspirational performance saw Kingston upset champ Daniel Bryan and lasting more than an hour before falling to Randy Orton. His gutsy showing led to a groundswell of support from his peers and members of the WWE Universe. It was clear who had the momentum entering the Chamber.
The crowd in Houston cheered Kingston on as he survived until the end against Bryan. There were moments when the audience truly thought the man who wasn’t even supposed to be in the match would walk away WWE champion. Much to a large portion of the arena and those watching at home, the Bryan retained.
However, the week was the latest example how Kingston has run with the proverbial ball given to him. It’s also a testament to the respect earned from his body over work across nearing 12 years on WWE television. This includes multiple reigns with virtually every title besides the top prize on the blue brand.
Most recently Kingston shined as part of a tag team with Big E and Xavier Woods, but the 37-year-old is no stranger to singles success.
Kingston’s last big main event “push” up until recently came almost a decade ago with Orton. The two traded victories. Among the highlights of their rivalry saw Kingston emerge the sole survivor of his Survivor Series team by taking out the master of the RKO.
Unfortunately, he never stayed in the main event scene for very long. Although he has always been an anticipated part of the Royal Rumble this year.
Word is going around that Bryan’s opponent is still being decided or finalized for the “biggest spectacle” in sports entertainment. Names ranging from Kevin Owens to Kurt Angle have been thrown around to get the slot. Though the way the story has played out, nothing would excite fans more to see Kingston defeat Bryan at Fastlane.
Another scenario could be a false finish leading into a must-be-a-winner showdown at WrestleMania in New Jersey at MetLife Stadium.
These options are not likely to occur. Despite Kingston’s positive string of events, the odds are definitely not in his favor with all signs pointing to Bryan keeping his environmentally-friendly championship.
You can bet Bryan as the favorite at -625 and by pinfall at -500 with Unibet. For a match prop, look for Bryan earning the first “near” fall (cover attempt that manages a clear two-count by the referee) at -167 with Unibet.
Of course, stranger things have happened than Kingston overcoming the odds. But all signs point to March 10 not being the night. Although he may have done enough to make the dream come true down the road.
