Craps is an oddity among standard casino games. It is the only game where the player, rather than the dealer, has the initial interaction with the betting device – in this case the pair of dice that are thrown along the Craps table.
Both players and spectators bet on the outcome of the dice, but the shooter must bet the table minimum on the pass line by betting on what the dice will show, or on the don’t pass line, by betting against the result of the dice.
Craps has two separate stages, the 'Come Out' and the 'Point'. The first sees the elected shooter roll the dice. If the result is a 2, 3, or 12, then the shooter is said to "crap out" and the pass line bets lose. Then the next shooter steps up. If the result is a 7 or 11, sometimes known as a natural shot, the pass line bets win.
The first shooter continues until they roll a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, which triggers the next stage: the Point. The dealer moves the button to a specific number, known as the point number. If the shooter rolls this, the pass bets win. If the shooter rolls a 7, the pass bets lose and the round is over.
Although live dealer games have evolved into slick HD broadcasts, the developers who design them have yet to come up with a way to bring Craps play to the live online marketplace. They could have the dealer throw the dice themselves, but this is obviously not as involved or exciting as throwing the dice from your own hand while people are shouting from around the table.
More than any other game, Craps is a communal experience, and it is not yet possible to achieve that camaraderie and gaming spirit through a live broadcast. In 2013 a company called Vivo Gaming did implement such a system.
This involved two dealers, one who acted as the normal table host, and the second as the shooter, the person who rolled the dice. However, the promise of this system was never fully realised, and is not currently offered at any online casino.
When browsing casino games to play, you may discover another dice game called Sic Bo. Although very similar to Craps, the Chinese game has two major differences. The first is that it is played with three dice instead of the two used in Craps.
The second is that Sic Bo is purely a game of chance, as every roll of the dice results in a win or a loss. In contrast, when playing Craps, certain wagers require several rolls of the dice before they can be judged to be a win or a loss, meaning that there are strategical advantages to be gained, making it not entirely down to chance.
The two major bets that can be placed are Pass Line and Don’t Pass Line bets. These are the most popular because they have a 50% chance of coming in, while the casino has a small advantage of 1.41% for the former, and 1.40% for the latter.
If you were in a real casino, betting against the line might prove unpopular at a table full of people betting the other way, but if you’re playing online, this social factor has no influence on your style of play.
The other bets you can try are buying or placing numbers. The buy bet offers true odds with no house advantage, although you normally pay to do so. The place bet still carries the house advantage.
If you are going to buy or place numbers, the best ones are the even numbers 4, 6, 8, and 10. Placing on the 6 and 8 is cheaper than buying them, while the opposite is true of 4 and 10.
