888 announced earlier this week they had secured sponsorship of the world's top online poker tournament player, Chris Moorman. Long considered the king of online poker play, Moorman has officially signed on as a brand ambassador for the behemoth online poker provider, 888poker.
Moorman joins a growing class of 888poker ambassadors which include major names like Kara Scott and former World Cup champion, Denilson. It seems 888poker has been on a tirade of signing top brand ambassadors as they spent the beginning of 2016 snatching up sponsorship of any top names they could secure.
Combine the already star-studded lineup representing 888poker with the notoriety of Moorman within the industry and you have a receipt for some major brand exposure.
Before we get to Moorman's impact on the brand's perception, we must address the current lineup of stars already rocking the 888poker logo. The first of a few major sponsorships recently secured by 888 was Kara Scott's signing back in March.
Scott is known for her trail blazing efforts as a women in poker. Despite only gaining access to the "boy's club" of poker through media - Scott started out as a commentator for Sky Poker before turning pro herself, Scott went on to become only the second woman in history to finish in the money at two consecutive years of the World Series of Poker, among a wealth of other notable accomplishments.
Scott was joined later that month by former World Cup champion and Premier League star, Brazil's Denilson. The Brazilian football star signed a deal with 888poker in late March committing to appearances at a number of events worldwide as the 888 brand ambassador.
Denilson's signing was more evidence 888 was looking to make a massive splash with their ambassadors, including players outside the immediate online poker world. Scott and Denilson are also joined on the 888poker team by other top poker players from around the world including German-born Dominik Nitsche and the most recent signee other than Moorman, Jeff Gross.
Moorman's major sponsorship announcement overshadowed - for good reason - the announcement of an additional top brand ambassador joining the team, professional poker player Jeff Gross. According the his official twitter account, Gross will be sporting the 888poker logo for the rest of the WSOP tour.
Gross, a $2.5 million career live tournament earner, joins the 888poker team for the remaining tournaments in this year's WSOP. Gross has come close to securing wins on the WPT as well as the WSOP despite no major tournament wins to his name.
Fortunately, it wasn't the tournament performances or total earnings 888poker was concerned with regarding Gross but instead his impact on the world's top video streaming service, Twitch. Touting almost 250,000 viewers on his twitch account, Gross clearly brings a unique clout with him to the brand.
888 and their online poker site are clearly interested in expanding their brand through quality ambassadors. Big name after big name continues to sign on to represent the world's second largest poker site so many would assume the signing of the world's number one online tournament player was a 'no-brainer' but, in fact, many industry veterans were surprised 888 was able to land the star.
888poker is only 2nd in terms of poker sites to the powerhouse PokerStars. The world's number one poker site consistently snatches up the top names in terms of sponsorships so many assumed Moorman was the next big name to jump on board but surprisingly the UK-native went with 888.
Either way, 888 is ecstatic to land arguably the world's best online poker tournament player. In early February of this year, Moorman made international news when he secured the record for total career earnings from online poker. Moorman passed the $13 million earnings mark, or around £9.2 million, to become the number one earning online poker player of all time.
Aside from the record-breaking earnings, Moorman touts numerous tournament titles and a wealth of top finishes. Chris Moorman IS online poker and 888poker is beyond proud to tout his name as their brand's ambassador.
