PartyPoker Pushes MILLIONS Tournament Prize to £5 Million

Although things might be a bit frosty between Russia and the rest of the world right now, that isn’t stopping PartyPoker from hosting its latest tournament there. Fresh from its successful PartyPoker Million Main Event in March, the company will be returning to the Sochi Resort and Casino in September with a guaranteed prize pool of $5 million, with the promise of making one player an instant millionaire with a top prize of $1 million!

PartyPoker’s Multi-Million Prize Pool

Not content with the cool $1.13 million prize pool that was created during the recent competition, PartyPoker has announced that the next MILLIONS event will have a guaranteed pool of $5 million, of which $1 million will be reserved for the eventual winner.

To put that figure in context, the winner in the Sochi March Millions, Ukrainian player Dmitry Chop, was gifted with a purse of $225,000. Not bad but, still, not $1 million. PartyPoker LIVE President John Duthie said:

"After the hugely successful first event in Sochi, PartyPoker LIVE will be coming back! This event was received so well by the Russian community, it's clear there is an appetite for poker in this region. So we will be returning in September for the $5,000,000 guaranteed event and making one player a millionaire!"

This is not the only event PartyPoker is offering a $1 million prize at. Its Dusk til Dawn tournament in Nottingham is scheduled to take place from 6-16 April, with a collective pool of £6 million, although including side events this could rise to in excess of £8 million. Not only that, there will be three individual tournaments that guarantee the winner walks away with £1 million.

How to Book Your Seat in Sochi

If you want to try and book your seat in the preliminary round, there is a $550 buy in online or in person to compete in the Phase 1 events. If you would rather skip straight to the games, there is a Day 1 buy in of $5,000. Players will also have the chance to win a place via satellite tournaments and online qualifiers hosted exclusively on PartyPoker.

These will begin from the 2 April, with the buy-in fees tied to the Russian Central Bank’s currency exchange rates. One poker player who should definitely be in attendance is the latest addition to Team PartyPoker, Russia’s Anatoly Filatov. Although he finished 28th in the recent $300 + 30 No Limit Hold’em tournament in Sochi, he will be returning with a vengeance in September to try and keep the $1 million on Russian soil.

He will likely be joined by fellow Russians Asker Aloev, Boris Yanpolsky, and Lev Mnatskanyan, all of whom made it to the final table in March, only to be beaten by the one non-Russian player in the final eight. There was no hostility though, with Filatov tweeting his congratulations to Chop for his win.

PartyPoker Switching to Eight Hand Tables

As well as announcing the return to Russia after its success in Sochi, PartyPoker dropped the bombshell that it was moving from nine-handed to eight-handed tables for all of its multi-table online games. The brand’s ambassador, poker pro Patrick Leonard, has been a strong advocate for this for some time now and expressed his delight via Twitter by saying:

"Great change by @partypoker all tables are eight handed now. Means better structures, more hands played and way more fun for recreational."

Although the change is not a major adjustment, it should mean that more hands are played, allowing for slick tournaments and freeing up play, as there is one less player in every round to match and pay the blinds. PartyPoker have been trialling the system in a closed beta and it must have yielded good results for them to release the chance across the board.

The first test PartyPoker will face on the new system is when Powerfest returns in May. There will be over 300 events in the space of two weeks, with a whopping $20 million guaranteed prize money. There are buy ins for all levels, from $5.50 up to the Super High Roller event that comes with a $25,500 price tag just to sit at the table.
