While his namesake Cristiano Ronaldo is still happily playing football in Spain, the original Ronaldo has been rather quiet since his injury-forced retirement in 2011. However, it seems the Brazilian has moved onto another sport, wowing the crowds with a newfound passion for poker.
According to the Daily Mirror, the 98-capped player has managed to work his way up to 18th place out of 57 players remaining in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event, which takes place at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. This is an incredible achievement considering that there were 200 players on day one of the event. After four days of intense play, Ronaldo was sitting on a chip pile of 512,000, almost 100,000 above the average.
In between rounds with heavy hitters such as USA’s Walter Fisher and Argentina’s Juan Martin Pastor, Ronaldo has been wowing crowds with his not-forgotten football skills, taking on fellow poker players in the lobby of the casino. His focus will soon be back on the poker table though, as he sets his sights on the final table and the chance to win the $1.4 million pot, although he is now guaranteed a payout of $24,140.
Ronaldo has been tuning his game for well over a year, ever since agreeing to become one of the celebrity sports stars to join Team PokerStars, along with tennis pros Boris Becker and Rafael Nadal. In fact, Ronaldo had a side bet with the latter a few months ago during a poker game in London. The former footballer lost the charity match, and was forced to carry out Nadal’s forfeit: to wash up over 400 plates left over from the event.
Whether Ronaldo will manage to progress to the final table will be decided in the coming days, but you don’t have to be a former footballer to be a successful poker player. If you would like to try your hand at the other beautiful game, why not visit Winner Poker today?
