Big Mover In Grand National Odds After Weights Revealed
Trainer Paul Nicholls looks to have another live one for the Grand National, after his Give Me A Cooper was slashed in the Aintree betting, following the unveiling of the 2019 Grand National weights.
At a star-studded lunch in Liverpool, the city home to Aintree and the Grand National, three-time Grade 1 winner Bristol De Mai was announced as this year's topweight for the world's most famous chase.
The eight-year-old will carry 11st 10lb, should he line up for owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, his lofty presence in the field meaning at present, last year's fourth Anibale Fly is set to carry 2lbs less than last year at 11st 6lb.
It also means that the last horse amongst the 110 entries guaranteed a run at this stage is the Jessica Harrington-trained Sandymount Duke, he, former Welsh National winner Monbeg Notorious, and 2016 Paddy Power chase scorer Noble Endeavor all booked for bottom weight of 10st 6lb.
Will Market Mover Get In?
Paul Nicholls, who won the 2012 Grand National with grey Neptune Collonges, has his market mover Give Me A Copper weighted at number 60 on that entries list, well below the cut-off of 40, but was nevertheless cut from 50/1 to 33/1 in the 2019 Grand National betting - his odds shift the biggest move in the market.
BHA handicapper Martin Greenwood, who framed the weights for the first time, explained Give Me A Cooper's chances of making the final Grand National field on Saturday, April 6.
“At the entry stage, you needed to be around the mid-70s to get you into the race," he said. "I think anything based in the top 80 has a chance of getting in. Four of the last five years, horses approaching that number have got in, so some connections shouldn’t give up because they are rated towards the bottom.”
With seven weeks until the big race, the lightly-raced nine-year-old has plenty of time to move up from 10st 1lb in the weights. He returned to action at Sandown (watch below) earlier this month, having been off the track since winning his second chase start at Kempton in November 2017.
Staying on to be fourth in that valuable 3m handicap chase (above), Give Me A Copper went in to many notebooks, and Nicholl has now said the first target is the Ultima Handicap Chase at next month's Cheltenham Festival, for which he is now the red-hot 6/1 favourite.
His fellow Grand National entry Singlefarmpayment is next in the betting at 12/1.
Auvergnat 'Hard To Weigh Up'
Speaking about his first experience of framing the Grand National weights, Greenwood highlighted the Enda Bolger-trained Auvergnat as the toughest horse to weight, with Vintage Clouds and Elegant Escape other eye-catchers.
“I found Auvergnat (10st 8lb) of Enda Bolger’s hard to weigh up," he said. "He has a lot of Cross Country form, and he was the hardest one I had to deal with. He has been running primarily in Cross Country races and they are events which are having an increasing impact on the Grand National, highlighted by Tiger Roll’s success last year.
"He would almost have three different ratings, one in the mid-140s for regulation fences, a high 150s for the Cross Country fences, and I have put him somewhere in the middle of that (152) to tie in with Josies Orders [who he also has form with]."
Tiger Roll (11st 1lb) has been raised 9lbs in the handicap after last year's Grand National win, close second Pleasant Company (10st 11lb) going up 7lbs. Despite the rises, Tiger Roll shares 20/1 favouritism with the up-and-coming Elegant Escape.
Greenwood added: “I think there are several interesting runners like Vintage Clouds and Elegant Escape, who is towards the top of the betting and he is an improving horse and was a good second to Frodon at Cheltenham last time out, so you can see why he is one of the more fancied horses."
