Bookies Slash Odds for Queen to Abdicate Throne This Year
A huge year for the royal family could see its biggest development yet. Bookies have slashed odds that Queen Elizabeth will step down before the end of 2018. Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead told the Express in an interview that bookies believe the queen may seek a leave from the throne to spend more time with her growing list of descendants.
“2018 has been, and will continue to be, a monumental year for the Royal family and whilst the Queen shows no signs of slowing down at the moment there is every chance she may choose to step down and spend more time with her family.”
Bookmaker Odds Lower
The nation’s bookmakers have clearly taken notice of the potential abdication by the beloved but aging Queen. Coral has lowered odds to just 3/1 that Queen Elizabeth will abdicate the throne to allow her eldest son, Prince Charles, to take over. Speculation has increased in the wake of the birth of Prince Louis, her third great-grandchild from Prince William and Kate Middleton.
The Queen now has six great-grandchildren and a seventh, from granddaughter Zara Tindall, is expected later this year. Not surprisingly, the moving odds are motivated in part because of the Queen’s expanding family.
At 92 years of age, with 66 of those on the throne, it wouldn’t be a shock for Elizabeth to take time from her busy list of royal obligations. Her husband, Prince Philip, has already taken a reduced role in public life.
Recent Speech Fuels Speculations
The queen’s blossoming family isn’t the only reason behind the slashed odds from UK bookmakers. At last month’s meeting of Leaders of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth said she would like Charles to be the organization’s next leader.
The organization, a 53-nation group made up mostly of former British territories, does not automatically seat the British monarch as its head.
Her avocation on behalf of the crown prince indicates she wants her eldest son to continue her legacy developing the group of nations. She may give up the throne to make sure that happens sooner than later.
Elizabeth has been the head of state of the United Kingdom since 1952, when she took over from her late father, George VI. If and when the 69-year-old Charles takes over the throne, he will be the 42nd monarch to reign since William the Conqueror took the crown in 1066 after the Battle of Hastings.
Charles has had a long wait as Elizabeth is the longest lived and reigning monarch in British history. She is also currently the world’s longest-serving head of state.
Big Year Could Get Even Bigger
There’s already been plenty to keep the royal family busy this year. Along with the queen’s 92nd birthday on April 21, the royals welcomed Prince Louis on April 24. Prince Harry, the queen’s grandson and sixth in the line of royal succession, is set to marry American actress Meghan Markle later this month.
The royal family’s busy year has led to plenty of opportunities for bookies and betting websites. Punts on the name and child of the latest royal baby, the third child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, provided popular for gamblers.
And, as always, royal wedding betting has captivated the nation, where bets can be placed on anything from the weather to the maker of the bride’s wedding dress.
