Willie Mullins will on Friday be crowned leading trainer at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival and his odds on the best betting sites back that up that.

The winning-most Cheltenham Festival trainer has hit the board five times in the first three days, and it would have been six had Galopin Des Champs not crashed out of Thursday's opener in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Despite Mullins having a number of high-profile chances on Day Three, only Allaho managed to convert his opportunity in the Ryanair Chase.

Galopin Des Champs joined the ‘unluckiest Cheltenham Festival losers’ club when he buckled on landing after the last fence when miles clear of Bob Olinger, who was gifted a hollow victory.

The galloping grey horse had been so dominant up to that point that horse racing betting sites have slashed his odds of winning’s next year’s Gold Cup into 3/1 from 6/1.

A philosophical Mullins said: "It's just one of those things. Galopin Des Champs was doing everything right the whole race. He landed properly and he just slipped after landing".

Mullins - who is a 1/10 shot to be crowned leading trainer with Ladbrokes - was also expected to strike with Dinoblue in the Mares Novices’ Hurdle but the previously unbeaten mare dropped right out of contention turning for home and was well beaten off.

Mullins is three clear of Gordon Elliott (5/1 with Coral), who hasn’t had a winner since Delta Work won the Cross Country Chase on the opening day. Elliott is tied on two winners with Nicky Henderson, Venetia Williams and Henry de Bromhead.

That gap is likely to widen given the Mullins team have four favourites on the final day, the first of which is Vauban in the Triumph Hurdle.

His three Gold Cup runners are all double-figure odds, but it wouldn’t be a huge shock if any of them won what looks a wide-open renewal.
