The Genting Poker Series is celebrating its first female winner this week, after Polish poker pro Ellie Biessek hit the big time at the tour's newly added Newcastle-upon-Tyne main event.
Biessek walked away from the £400 buy-in poker tournament with an amazing first prize of £38,750, after seeing off strong competition from online pro Jamie Rutherford in a tense final heads-up battle. This latest win is her biggest to date, taking her lifetime earnings to well over £100,000.
The original field was made up of around 400 runners, making this one of the most hotly contested northern legs of the tour, and contributing to a hefty prize pool of £160,000.
Biessek had to battle long and hard throughout the event, which saw a number of leading poker pros, including Genting-sponsored Daiva Barauskaite, fall by the wayside.
The Polish winner, who usually works as a maths teacher in Winchester, said: “I am absolutely thrilled, very happy indeed. I didn’t get aces or queens once during the whole tournament, but I ground it out and I always thought that the trophy had my name on it. As a mathematician, I am fascinated by numbers and that is why I love teaching and poker.”
The next stop on the Genting Poker Series tour is Sheffield, with the tournament scheduled to kick off on 15th May. Online satellite qualifiers for the event are currently underway on Genting's website, so head over to Genting Poker today for your chance to qualify throughout the coming weeks. Live qualifier tournaments are also taking place in physical Genting Casinos across the country.
