Football Helps New Jersey Betting Revenue Spike In September

New Jersey's skyrocketing sports betting revenue continued to grow in September with the state reaping its first full month of football betting to the tune of $37.88 million in total gross sports wagering revenue.

According to the September 2019 gaming revenue report posted Tuesday by New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement, the state’s staggering total gross sports wagering revenue last month grew just over 50% above the previously reported $25.2 million in its August report.

Year-to-date, that makes New Jersey’s total gross sports wagering revenue a staggering $190.61 million with three busy months left.

New Jersey Sports Betting Revenue, Sept. vs. Aug. 2019

Net Revenue$37.88M$25.2M+50.3%
Total Handle$445.6M$293.6M+51.8%

Mobile Betting Stays Above 80%

Mobile betting continued to account for more than 80% of the total sports betting handle in New Jersey. While the previous two months showed 84.8% and 84.9% of the total handle came via New Jersey’s mobile betting options, September’s total mobile betting handle of $374.24 million kept pace with that trend. It accounted for 84% of the monthly total.

The total combined handle for retail (in-person) and mobile (online) betting was $445.56 million in September with New Jersey’s retail betting accounting from $71.31 million of that number.

Year-to-date, that means around 84% of the total gross sports betting handle has come from bettors placing mobile bets. The year-do-date handle at the end of September was $2.97 billion with $2.44 billion stemming from mobile betting action.

New Jersey’s 17 mobile betting operators, including Unibet, which started taking bets on Sept. 10 through a partnership with Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, makes the state by far the biggest and best mobile betting market in the country.

In-Person And Mobile Betting Handles Grow

New Jersey’s sports betting market has continued its rapid ascent since legalizing sports betting less than 17 months ago. The September report is just another sign that New Jersey is fast becoming the U.S. sports betting capital, even in comparison to what was long-considered the king of sports betting, Nevada, particularly Las Vegas.

September’s numbers bolstered New Jersey’s chances. Both the retail and mobile betting handles grew in September compared to the previous month. The retail handle grew 60% over the $44.35 million reported in August to $71.31 million for September. Meanwhile, New Jersey’s mobile betting handle grew 50% from $249.23 million in August to $374.24 million in September.

There’s no telling just how much more New Jersey’s lucrative sports betting market will grow the rest of the year. As the college and NFL football seasons march on, it seems likely bettors in the state will continue to place wagers.
