Captures 2 Writing Awards In APSE Contest Captures 2 Writing Awards In APSE Contest Group won two national writing awards in the Associated Press Sports Editors annual contest.

The group joined APSE in 2019 and competed in the competition that recognizes the best sports journalism in America for the first time. Group was judged in the B category, the nation’s second largest. Other winners in the B category included the Charlotte Observer, Indianapolis Star, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Boston Herald and Des Moines Register.

Brant James, Ryan Butler and staff won in the Projects category for a series of stories looking at how sports betting evolved in the year since the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act.

Butler won in the Explanatory category for a selection of stories examining Colorado’s confusing sports betting referendum.

APSE is a professional organization representing sports editors, assistants and staffs nationally, with a focus on standards for fairness, ethics and journalistic excellence. Its contest is considered the most prestigious in sports journalism.

Winners will be recognized at the APSE Summer Conference in Indianapolis June 24-27.
