When the Nations League was proposed, it's fair to say it was greeted with very little enthusiasm.

UEFA introduced the tournament in 2018 to turn dull friendlies into a competitive format with promotion and relegation thrown into the mix.

To encourage nations to take it seriously, the final four places at next year's European Championships would be offered to teams that did well in the inaugural Nations League.

That was this path Scotland took to ensure they ended their 22-year wait to feature in the finals of a major tournament where they will face England, just as they did in Euro '96.

The second Nations League draws to a close this week with the four semi-final spots for the group winners in League A still up for grabs. However, England's 2-0 loss in Belgium on Sunday meant early elimination for Gareth Southgate's side.

Scotland and Wales currently top their respective Nations League groups and will hope to finish strongly to secure one of the two World Cup play-off spots available to the best table toppers who fail to make it through the World Cup qualifiers that are scheduled to begin in March.

On Tuesday and Wednesday night, a total of 27 fixtures will be contested including Norway's trip to Austria. Norway's game in Romania on Sunday was cancelled because the Norwegians were prevented from travelling following defender Omar Elabdellaoui's positive test for Covid-19.

On top of Romania possibly being handed the three points, Norway's first choice squad will remain in quarantine and a new squad will be assembled from players outside the country who are free to travel to Austria.

Wednesday's game in Vienna is a top-of-the-table clash that will decide the winner of Group B1.

Austria won September's first meeting 2-1 in Oslo which set the tone for the highest scoring group.

The nine matches played so far have produced a total of 26 goals at an average of 2.88 per game.

The average number of goals throughout the tournament is currently 2.15 which is a decrease of 0.26 on the first ever Nations League.

When the draw was initially made, Group A4 stood out as it saw Germany and Spain go head-to-head. The two countries meet in Seville on Tuesday to determine who wins the group.

The group has lived up to the expectations and has been bettor-friendly if you like BTTS and over 2.5 goal accumulators.

Both ties on Saturday saw all four countries score for the sixth and seventh time in the group while Sergio Ramos' two penalty misses for Spain in their 1-1 draw at Switzerland prevented a sixth game where over 2.5 total goals paid out.

  • BTTS - 61 of 134 games (45.5%)
  • Over 2.5 goals - 48 of 134 games (35.8%)

Group C2, which is currently led by North Macedonia, has seen goals for both teams in eight of its 10 games while Group A3 has the most games with three or more total goals scored thanks to Sweden's 2-1 win over Croatia on Saturday.

If Germany and Spain's group is the traditional 'Group of Death', then Group B4 has been the 'Group of Dearth'.

Wales can clinch top spot if they avoid defeat at home to Finland in a group that has produced a measly total of 13 goals from 10 matches which works out to be a goal every 69 minutes.

Finland's 2-1 win at Bulgaria on Sunday was the first game in that group to see three goals scored and was only the second game in which BTTS landed.

Whether you love the Nations League or not, it's here to stay. All 14 groups winners have yet to be decided and UEFA will be delighted with how the second Nations League is coming to a climax, even if the games haven’t been filled with goals.

But with plenty to play for as well as pride, maybe the final round of fixtures will see a flurry of goals to win over those who were sceptical of its inclusion into the football calendar.
