Manchester United’s Chances of Signing Milinkovic-Savic Fade
Manchester United look unlikely to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, one of their summer transfer targets, as the odds of him completing the deal have drifted in the final hours of the transfer window.
The 24-year-old Serbian international has been linked with a move from Lazio to Old Trafford throughout the summer. He is viewed as a potential replacement for want away midfielder, Paul Pogba.
Milinkovic-Savic is a central midfielder with an eye for goal, as evidenced by the 12 he netted in Serie A in 2017/18. He also featured in all three of Serbia’s matches at last summer’s World Cup.
The deal has looked possible as Lazio president Claudio Lotito has said they would be open to selling the player if an acceptable offer was received.
He said: “If some offers were to be presented, we’d evaluate them with a spirit of collaboration that looks after the interests of the club and the player. We’ll make the decisions that are best for everyone.”
In the final week of July, the deal definitely looked to be in the pipeline, with a fee in the region of £70m quoted for the player. The best bookmakers priced United at just 8/13 to be Milinkovic-Savic’s club after the summer transfer window closed at that stage.
Transfer Odds Drifting
While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are still the favourites by a considerable margin, the price has now moved out to 6/4.
This puts the Red Devils comfortably ahead of PSG, who are 20/1, and Juventus at 25/1. But with just hours of the English transfer window remaining, the drifting price on United suggests Milinkovic-Savic will be remaining in Italy with Lazio for the season ahead.
It’s possible the odds of a deal have lengthened due to fresh concerns over the player’s fitness. Lazio played Al-Shabab in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, and while they won comfortably enough, Milinkovic-Savic was substituted in the 68th minute, showing visible discomfort.
If the deal doesn’t happen as now looks likely, United could be left relatively short of midfield options. Since the start of last season, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrara have left without being replaced, and it’s not impossible Pogba could also depart.
With Romelu Lukaku also poised to move to Italy, missing out on Milinkovic-Savic could prove costly.
The Red Devils’ price for a top four finish has today moved out from 11/10 to 6/5 with Black Type. United’s clash with Chelsea on Sunday is already looking like a massive match if Solskjaer’s side are to have a good campaign in 2019/20.
