New Jersey was on a record-setting pace for 2020, but that came to a halt in March, usually a huge sports betting month because of NCAA basketball. The state reported $181.9 million in total sports betting handle on Wednesday, according to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.

The $181,908,529 bet with New Jersey sportsbooks in March was down 63.2% from February’s $494,813,807 as sports and casinos were shut down by the coronavirus pandemic. The March total is down 51.2% from last March’s $372,451,342.

The New Jersey mobile betting handle was $163,449,027 in March, or 89.9% of the total handle. Mobile accounted for 88.2% of the total handle in February 2020 and 80.1% in March 2019. The March mobile numbers were down 62.6% from February ($436,492,186) and they declined 45.2% year-over-year from March 2019 ($298,282,154).

Like other states reporting March figures, sports betting fell off drastically with New Jersey’s nine casinos closed for half of the month and almost no sports to bet on. At the top of its news release Wednesday, DGE pointed out in bold letters: “Due to COVID-19, Atlantic City Casinos closed at 8:00 p.m. on March 16, 2020. Internet gaming and online sports wagering operations have continued, but most sporting events have been canceled.”

Online Gaming Options In New Jersey

But unlike most other states, New Jersey has other online gaming options besides sports betting.

Online casino gaming is legal in New Jersey, as it is in Pennsylvania and Delaware. Online poker sites are also legal in those three states, along with Nevada. West Virginia and Michigan have legalized online casinos with launches scheduled later this year.

The internet gaming win total for March was $64.8 million, up from $52 million in February and an increase from $39.1 million last March. Total gaming handle figures are unavailable.

New Jersey's casinos, all located in Atlantic City, closed the same day as those in New York and Connecticut. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, when announcing the closures, made a point to say that gaming at New Jersey’s online casinos would continue. With stay-at-home orders in place in New York, New Jersey also was unable to capitalize on New Yorkers who have been coming into the state to place bets.

The retail sports betting handle in March was $18,459,502, according to the DGE. The retail handle for February was $58.32 million.

Earlier this month, the division of gaming enforcement moved the 2019 fourth-quarter casino profit and annual filing deadline back because of the coronavirus pandemic. Originally due on March 31, the new filing date for the state’s nine licensed casinos is April 30, according to a post on the division’s website. The new filing schedule also moves back the release date of the data to May 7.

The DGE doesn't include financial breakdowns for each specific sportsbook operator in the state but instead reports monthly revenue totals for each. The Meadowlands saw $5,909,697 in sports betting revenue in March, down from $10.99 million in February. Resorts Digital saw an increase, posting $5,136,690 in March, which was up from $4 million in February.
