New York Mayor Betting Sees Adams Overtake Early Favourite Yang
Eric Adams is the new favourite to win the 2021 New York mayoral election as a surge in popularity for the Brooklyn politician sees him edge ahead of Democratic rival Andrew Yang in the latest politics betting odds.
New Yorkers will go to the polls on November 2 to elect Bill de Blasio’s successor for the next four years. Before then, both the Republican and Democrat parties will hold primaries to select their candidates.
Adams is one of eight major Democrats seeking the party’s nomination on June 22 and has already earned a swathe of endorsements at various levels of the political spectrum.
The 60-year-old was one of the first to announce his intention to run in this summer’s Democratic primary but got off to a slow start in terms of polling numbers.
In February the current Brooklyn Borough President was neck-and-neck with Yang as the favourite to be elected New York mayor at 17 points each.
However, since then Adams’ approval ratings have soared – and his odds have also caught up.
New York Mayor Betting
At the start of the year Adams was 5/1 to win the New York mayoral election, giving him a 16.7 per cent probability of success. Yang, meanwhile, was priced at 10/11 and supposedly had more than a 50 per cent chance of being elected.
However, since then Adams’ polling figures have risen to 22 per cent against Yang’s 16 per cent, while Kathryn Garcia is also enjoying a surge in popularity at 15 per cent.
Online betting sites are reflecting the growing confidence in Adams. He is now the 5/4 favourite to be elected as New York’s next mayor, with Yang out to Evens.
Garcia, meanwhile, has seen her price come in from as wide as 66/1 in February down to just 3/1 now.
However, there is also concern that the new ranked choice voting system implemented for the primaries hasn’t been adequately reflected in the polls, and that the US politics betting odds are perhaps a stronger indication of who might win this race – as was the case with Donald Trump in 2016.
What About The Republicans?
The reason so much attention is being placed on the Democratic primary is because whoever wins that race will almost certainly be voted in as the next New York mayor. No Republican has yet mounted a serious challenge.
This could, of course, change once the GOP have chosen their candidate – but lead name Curtis Sliwa is 66/1 to secure that coup. Even Trump himself is 100/1 to be the next New York mayor, so outlandish is it that a Republican will win come November.
As for Adams vs Yang, so far bettors are siding with the former as 62 per cent of all bets land on Yang. The businessman has already tried and failed to run for president and has certainly attracted interest from bettors as the race for New York intensifies.
