NFL Finds Australia Betting Partner, Not Looking For US One

The NFL is not pursuing an “official wagering” partnership in the U.S. even though it announced one with gaming giant Tabcorp in Australia on Thursday, a league spokesperson said in an email to Gambling.com.

“The Australian marketplace is much more mature than here in the U.S. where the league is not pursuing a partnership with a wagering partner,” Brian McCarthy told Gambling.com. “[Tabcorp] has been in this space since the 1960s.”

Under terms of a multi-year deal, Tabcorp, will “create unique NFL content and experiences for Australian fans across its digital platforms and venues,” according to a news release. In addition, TAB and the NFL will combine to promote the NFL’s official Pick’em free-to-play football game, the release said.

Tabcorp and Sky Channel will broadcast the NFL Network and six hours of NFL RedZone programming “across its commercial network of more than 4,400 pubs, clubs and TAB agencies,“ the release said.

NFL Slowly Following Lead Of Competitors

Once reticent to form any gambling affiliations, the NFL in the past several months has named Caesar’s Entertainment as its official casino partner domestically and Gateway Casinos & Entertainment as its Canadian equivalent. While the NBA, MLB and NHL have acquired official sports betting partners, the NFL had to this point deferred.

“We are looking forward to working with Tabcorp, the leading operator in Australia,” NFL Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy & Growth Officer Christopher Halpin said in a release. “We are excited about our growing popularity in Australia and this partnership will help further serve our fans there.”

But not in the U.S – yet.

Gaming deals and casino partnerships became a possibility with legal sports betting being deemed by leagues as an engagement tool after the repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018. The taboo of gambling has begun to fade among the mainstream and the prospect of profiting from sports betting has become a focus for sports leagues.
