Oakland Raiders Betting: 2018 Season in Review & Highlights

Oakland Raiders Betting: 2018 Season in Review & Highlights

Hope you bet against the Oakland Raiders a lot in 2018.

It was one of those seasons.

The Raiders were one of the bigger disasters in the league. Their win total over/under hovered around 8-9 prior to the season. They were an under bet all the way. Oakland finished just 4-12 and never showed signs of snapping out of its funk. The Raiders never won two games in a row in 2018.

And their first three wins were by a combined eight points and were decided on the final play of the game.

It was a wild season in Oakland, Jon Gruden’s first back in the NFL after a 10-season absence. The Raiders traded stars, Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper, who both helped their new team on the NFL betting lines. Oakland seemed to make news throughout the rocky season.

And there were plenty of betting highlights.

2018 Raiders Betting Trends

Fast Starters

The Raiders scored their fourth most points in the NFL on their first drive. However, they then often went to sleep offensively. Oakland scored just 290 points all season, the fifth fewest in the NFL. However, if you wanted to get a first to score prop, the Raiders were often your play.

Bet Against the Raiders

The Raiders opponent was often the right call against the spread. Oakland was beaten by 14 or more points nine times. Nine! It was the most in team history.

Best Cover

A 24-21 home win over the Steelers. The Steelers probably would have covered the 13-point road spread if Ben Roethlisberger didn’t miss most of the second half. Yet, Oakland somehow won 24-21. When Roethlisberger was on the field, the Steelers dominated. With Josh Dobbs? Not so much.

Worst Betting Loss

It was also the Raiders’ worst loss of the season, period. On a Thursday night to start Week 9, the one-win Raiders met their Bay Area rival, the one-win 49ers. The 49ers had to start third-string quarterback Nick Mullens in a pinch. It was his first start of his career.

The Raiders looked like a lock at +3. Instead, the 49ers pounded Oakland from the opening gun, winning 34-3.

Best Raiders Money

The Raiders were a pick ‘em against Denver in Week 16. The game, a Monday Night Football affair on Christmas Eve, may have been the final game in Oakland. The fans were electric. The Broncos were eliminated from playoff contention the week before and were clearly not in the mood to be away from home for Christmas.

The result – an easy two-touchdown Oakland win.

Worst Raiders Money

A 14-point spread at Kansas City in Week 17. The Chiefs needed to win the game to win the AFC West and secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs. The Raiders were coming off their emotional win over the Broncos and were spent.

The last thing they wanted was to be on the road against a good team. The result: a predictable 35-3 Kansas City win.

Way to Hurt the Over

In Week 15, the Raiders played Cincinnati, which was leading the NFL in points allowed. The Raiders scored just 16 points. In Week 17, the Raiders scored three points against the Chiefs. Kansas City allowed 35.3 points a game the previous five games.

Prop Machine: Lee Smith

Blocking tight end Lee Smith had 10 catches in 2018. Yet, from Weeks 13-15, he had one touchdown catch in each game. Smith had 46 catches and four touchdowns in his previous seven NFL seasons.

Not a Prop Machine: Derek Carr

Oakland quarterback Derek Carr threw for 4,049 yards, yet just 19 touchdown passes. He was a classic check-down Charlie in 2018. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes threw for a 1,000 yards more with 31 more touchdown passes.
