The wait for partypoker's native Windows Phone app finally came to an end this month, thanks to the online poker site's dedicated team of software developers. Following months of requests and questions from customers on social media, partypoker has finally unveiled its fully optimised Windows mobile app.
Despite coming many months after the release of its iOS and Android apps, the partypoker Windows Phone app will offer a broadly similar range of functionality, plus a couple of exciting extras. Although the app is only available to UK customers (for now) while in its beta phase, it comes fully equipped with cash games, deposit and withdrawal provisions and options for new players to create their first account while on the move.
Paying particular attention to user experience, partypoker's software team has given its latest release some innovative features, including portrait view and gesture controls.
In contrast to other mobile poker apps, such as those offered by the likes of PokerStars, Full Tilt or PKR, all the action inside partypoker's new Windows app is displayed in portrait view. Although this orientation might take some getting used to for players familiar with other poker apps, the set-up works in tandem with the app's unique gesture controls to create an ergonomic playing environment.
Instead of simply clicking + and - buttons to adjust your bets before hitting the "fold," "check," "bet" or "raise" buttons, the app allows you to control the action by swiping your finger across the screen.
Taking advantage of the touch screen capabilities that all Windows smartphones offer, the app gives you the ability to slide your bets onto the table as well as flick your cards into the muck.
Although this may still be a far cry from the physical actions you might perform at a live poker table, the controls are certainly closer to reality than other similar products. In fact, according to partypoker's PR team, the functionality has been designed to make "one-handed play" at lot easier.
Indeed, one of the major issues mobile poker players have had in recent years is the ability to control the action using one hand. Because we're often multi-tasking when we're operating our mobiles, there's a definite need to have an interface that can be controlled with the minimum amount of effort. This is a challenge the company has tried to tackle with its gesture control feature, and it could be a distinctive USP that gives it the edge in the highly competitive mobile poker market.
As mentioned, the current version of the partypoker Windows Phone app is only available in the UK as a beta product. However, the operator's plans are to expand the offering over the coming months. In addition to adding multi-table tournaments (MTTs) into the mix, the company will also be rolling the app out across Europe throughout 2016.
The partypoker app is available to download via the Windows App Store, and currently supports the Windows Phone 10, Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows Phone 8 operating systems.
