According to The Telegraph, last weekend the lucky 48-year-old Dean Clay managed to predict the results of a whopping 14 football games. The group risk account manager from Chandler’s Ford in Eastleigh took his chances with a £2 football accumulator bet before hitting the big time by Sunday evening. Initially, he thought he had only won £69,882, but after visiting the local Coral betting shop where he placed the bet, he discovered that he was in line for the bookmakers bonus, taking his total winnings to a whopping £92,944.
The Chelsea fan naturally bet on a win for The Pensioners, as well as victories for Middlesbrough, Derby, Bristol Rovers, Preston, Barnet, and Southampton. He had a total of 13 games to sit through on the Saturday, but had to wait until Sunday afternoon for his fourteenth and final prediction to come to fruition: a draw between Burnley and West Bromwich Albion. The nervous punter just could not face watching the game, so went for a round of golf instead. As he explained: "I couldn't bear to watch the game and when I heard Burnley were winning 2-0, I thought it was game over. I was on the 16th hole when I realised I had won. I did not know what to do with myself. I just had a feeling of amazement."
The win comes at an opportune time for Dean and his wife Laura, as they had secured a mortgage on the day before the football results started pouring in. Their deposit is now in a much more comfortable position; they're even keeping some aside for the arrival of their first baby in July.
Upon hearing about the win, Coral spokeswoman Nicola McGeady said: "To predict 14 correct outcomes is a fantastic achievement and we couldn't have asked for a worthier winner than Mr Clay. Over the last couple of weeks we have seen so many customers win life-changing sums of money for just small stakes, proving you don't have to stake big to win big money."
