According to The Lad Bible, the anonymous punter amassed free bets worth £110 and then placed them on a whopping 13-fold accumulator bet, choosing his favourite football teams rather than odds-on favourites. As he explained after the win: “This is the first time I've won big; all I did was picked the teams I like. I'm going to celebrate by going to Hong Kong, maybe I'll try my luck at the races there. I definitely think I won thanks to the New Year luck!”
The bets were spread all leagues, from the lower tiers of the Scottish divisions – with a bet on East Fife to beat East Stirlingshire – to the cream of Europe, where the man predicted Italy’s Juventus would beat German side Borussia Dortmund. The lucky restaurateur also predicted Barcelona would trounce Man City in the Champions League match, where two goals from hitman Luis Suarez set up the Spanish side perfectly for victory on the away leg.
Most of the other results were spread across the English League One and Conference divisions, with Brentford beating Blackpool, Derby beating Charlton, and Ipswich smashing Birmingham City. The near-psychic punter also managed to guess that Middlesbrough would beat Bolton, Wolves would beat Fulham, and that Watford would walk over Rotherham. In the remaining games, the maverick gambler bet on Bristol City to beat Doncaster, while Bristol Rovers won against Braintree, Grimsby beat Telford, and Preston managed to pull the wool over the eyes of Walsall.
Chinese New Year turned out to be a great weekend to place the bets, as only one game out of 19 around England finished on a draw, and seven of the top eight in football's second tier won. On hearing about the epic cash prize, Ladbrokes spokesperson Jack Beresford joked: “Unlike some Chinese takeaway food, this accumulator win was sweet but most definitely not sour.”
