According to Rossendale Free Press, one lucky punter picked up a whopping £158,000 after a successful day of horse racing betting last week. The 58-year-old retired magistrate won after he managed to pick all six winners of Betfred Sports' Scoop6 on a £16 bet. David Lawrence from Ramsbottom scooped the cash prize when the last race of the day was won by Montaire at Newbury. He was the only punter to correctly guess all six winners, and so was the sole winner of the grand prize.
Lawrence revealed he is no stranger to the Scoop6 bet. He said: “I’ve been playing the Scoop6 for years and it still hasn’t quite settled in that I’ve managed to win it. I was quite surprised I was the only winner on the day and, other than the money, it’s a great feeling knowing I was the top tipster in the country last Saturday."
Discussing his past gambling success, the ex-magistrate let slip that he almost won a similar accumulator at the turn of the millennium. “I’ve won the Place Fund a few times, which people forget often pays well, and had the first five winners about 15 years ago before missing out on the last leg in a photo."
He also revealed how he picked the six winners of his Scoop6 bet: “I read the Racing Post Weekender and closely follow the form. Many Clouds was a big fancy of mine last week and I’ll be using all the form evidence I can find ahead of the bonus race.”
The bonus Lawrence was keen to win was the Becher Chase at Aintree, which if he had guessed correctly would have netted him an additional £100,552. Though Lawrence enjoyed a day out at Aintree at the invitation of Betfred founder Fred Done, his choice to win, Chance Du Roy, came in fifth. The race was eventually won by Oscar Time. Despite the win, trainer Robert Waley-Cohen has ruled him out from running the Grand National at Aintree in April.
