Royal Baby Name Odds Slashed as Birth and Gender Revealed

Monday marked a day of great celebration across the United Kingdom as the newest Royal Baby was born to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Kate Middleton and Prince William welcomed their third child into the world in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital and it’s been confirmed that the child’s gender is male. Kensington Palace released the details via Twitter.

Baby Name Favourite Odds Slashed

Now that the top bookmakers know the baby is indeed a boy, the wagering on the choice of name will certainly ramp up. Ladbrokes, William Hill and Betfair all have the same favourite in Arthur. The concept of the newest Royal family member being named for the legendary king is an exciting one and it’s highly likely to be the name selected.

William Hill lists Arthur at 2/1 odds closely followed by Albert at 3/1 odds, then James 5/1, Philip and Thomas 6/1, Alexander 8/1 and Jack 10/1. The bookie even listed a crazy outlier long shot of Wayne at 500/1.

Ladbrokes has Arthur as the choice at 6/4 followed by James at 4/1 and Phillip at 5/1. Finally Betfair places Arthur at 5/2 odds, Phillip at 7/2, Albert at 9/2, Thomas 9/2, James 13/2. Several experts have backed up these odds weighing in with their thoughts based on the past and influence of modern times.

Little Believes Tradition Rules

Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, gave some of his insight on what the ultimate decision could be drawing on his experience following the Royal Family. In an interview with the BBC, Little said that tradition “plays a huge part” in such decisions “even in the 21st Century.”

”It will probably be something we have heard attributed to a prince... before. It's quite likely to follow the traditional route that William and Kate seem to favour. There are no hard and fast rules these days, it is much more relaxed.”

Little further elaborated that it will be unlikely a name is decided upon or released to the public until after gaining the official approval of Queen Elizabeth II.

“The Queen would obviously be consulted and, while she might not necessarily intervene and prevent a name from being used, she would certainly be aware of the name, long before any public announcement.”

Fitzsimmons Betting on Arthur

Royal commentator Richard Fitzsimmons reiterated that family heritage and links to it are “tremendously important” in the decision process. He said the couple will now doubt select a name that “resonates” and has “family links” and is “popular.”

“There has been a renewal of interest in the Victorian era. After the success of Victoria on the small screen, there's more popular interest in these royals and it's a chance to pay tribute to one of the great royal romances. When you choose a name for a royal baby there's the personal [preference]; there's the link with the royals past and present; but also you think about the public.”

All of that being said, Fitzsimmons believes that Arthur, the extremely recognizable and kingly name from British folklore, will be the Holy Grail for baby name betters.

“I think Arthur for a boy. What's wonderful about Arthur is it conjures up a kingship that never existed - Camelot was an egalitarian paradise and of course there was the quest for the Holy Grail. It's one of the great royal legends - and that's my bet.”

Athough it's too late to bet the date of the birth, for obvious reasons, with the announcement to come “in due time”, there’s still plenty of time to get your bets in on the name. There’s no guarantee what the couple will decide on and who knows? Maybe Wayne will get its due and join ice hockey’s Gretzky amongst the names celebrated as some form of royalty.
