UK Player Scoops £51.8 Million EuroMillions Jackpot

By Contributor | April 19th, 2016

A single ticket-holder from the UK won a £51.8 million jackpot in the EuroMillions on Tuesday 12th April. The anonymous winner, who came forward on Thursday to claim their prize, matched all five numbers – 9, 1, 5, 22 and 38 – in the main draw, along with the two Lucky Star numbers – 2 and 10 – to win the top prize.

Third Times a Charm

2016 has been a good year so far for British EuroMillions players. This was the third time that the jackpot has been won in the UK this year, following smaller wins of £24.7 million and £24.6 million in February. A player in Ireland also won £50 million in the same month. The UK is now level with Portugal in third place in the table of total jackpot wins per country in the history of the game.

Both countries have 58 top prize wins to their name since the international lottery started in 2004, but they have a lot of catching up to do on the two most successful nations – France and Spain – who have produced 78 and 76 winners respectively. The game is played in a total of nine countries in Europe. A National Lottery spokesperson said:

"National Lottery players in the UK are enjoying a fantastic run of luck on EuroMillions. This is the third jackpot to be won here in the UK this year. We urge all players to check their tickets, to see if they have scooped the £51.8 million jackpot, so they can begin to enjoy their life changing win as soon as possible."

Just Missed the Top 10

If the latest UK win is verified, the lucky recipient will find themselves just outside the top ten of British EuroMillions winners. The biggest winners to come from these shores were Colin and Chris Weir from North Ayshire in Scotland, who won a staggering £161 million back in July 2011.

The couple famously donated a slice of the jackpot to the Scottish independence campaign. The biggest ever EuroMillions jackpot was won by a Portuguese player in October 2014 who bagged a cool €190 million.

There were other big winners in the recent draw, with four ticket holders matching five numbers and one Lucky Star to win £207,523 each, and 12 further winners matching five numbers to earn themselves £23,058 each.

Luck of the...British?

It’s not just in the EuroMillions that Brits have been striking it lucky recently. This comes just a week after an anonymous player won £35.1 million in the National Lottery Lotto draw, breaking the record for the biggest prize paid to an individual ticket-holder. It’s a record that had only been set in January, when two winning tickets split a jackpot of £66 million.

Camelot, the company behind the National Lottery, is certainly living up to its promise of bigger jackpots after it raised the price of tickets from £1 to £2 in 2013. Similarly the US' Powerball changed it's rules in 2015 and pushed out an unbeleiable $1.5 billion jackpot in 2016.
