BetAmerica is set to enter the nascent Michigan online gambling market in a big way.

Churchill Downs, Inc., which owns the company, will offer the BetAmerica online sportsbook and iGaming platform in Michigan through a partnership with the Hannahville Indian Community.

A BetAmerica retail sportsbook will also launch at the Island Resort & Casino in the town of Harris, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The Michigan sportsbook and iGaming market should be ramping up in the latter part of 2020 and into 2021. Churchill Downs, Inc., will need regulatory approval in Michigan before launching its online sportsbook and casino gaming platforms.

BetAmerica sportsbooks are currently available in Indiana, Mississippi, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Its online casino products are available in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

“We are incredibly excited about our new partnership with BetAmerica,” Kenneth Meshigaud, Hannahville Indian Community Tribal Chairperson for the Island Resort & Casino, said in a CDI news release. “The BetAmerica sportsbook will expand upon our already compelling number of entertainment options, and provides another great reason for people to come and visit us up here on Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula.”

Michigan Sports Betting and iGaming Activity

The Michigan Gaming Control Board began accepting internet gaming and sports betting license applications from operators this summer.

Retail sports betting began in the state in March, only to be shut down after a few days when the coronavirus pandemic halted sports leagues and forced physical casinos to close. This week, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that Detroit’s three commercial casinos — MGM Grand, MotorCity and Greektown — would be allowed to reopen in Aug. 5. They will operate at 15% capacity.

The Island Resort & Casino reopened May 16.

Also, Michigan online poker sites and other forms of mobile gaming have become legal, with a launch date likely in late 2020, or at worst in early 2021.

Even with exact launch dates unknown, CDI was eager to get its BetAmerica brand on the minds of Michigan bettors as major sports start to return.

Whitmer signed a bill into law in December 2019 making retail and mobile sports betting legal in the state, along with iGaming.
