Colorado sports betting followed a national trend of seeing a decrease in July handle.

But when the state Department of Revenue released the information to the public, it tried to put a positive spin on things.

The total handle for July was $181,327,994, which is 21% less than the $229.8 million posted in June.

But on the bright side, it was pointed out in the release, that number was a 206% increase over the $59,186,619 the state brought in during the pandemic-challenged July 2020.

July 2021 total revenue was $15.65 million, down from $19.73 in June. Total taxes were $999,110, down from the $1.2 million in June.

Online sports betting was $179.125 million, down from $227.1 million in June. Mobile continues to account for almost all of the total betting handle, with 99% of wagers made online and 1% of wagers placed in retail locations, or $243,244.65. Colorado has 25 online operators and 17 retail.

Only Tennessee sports betting, which is online only and Virginia sports betting, which doesn’t have its retail up and running yet, had a higher percentage of online betting revenue.

Baseball Still Tops For Betting

Baseball betting was still tops in the state with customers placing $61 million in July wagers on MLB.

Next was basketball betting with $27 million.

Rounding out the top five was soccer betting with $13 million, tennis betting with $12 million and table tennis with $8 million.

That group should change soon, with NFL betting starting up in full swing in September.
