Delaware November Sports Betting Rises, But Falls in December

Delaware’s sports wagering activity for the last two months of 2020 experienced an up-and-down ride, according to the state’s report posted Thursday on the Delaware Lottery website.

The November total handle in Delaware was $19.5 million -- $9.5 million from sportsbooks and $10 million from sports lottery retailers -- which was an increase of 14.2% from October ($17.1 million) and up 15.8% from November 2019 ($16.8 million).

November’s total revenue was $5.9 million ($2.2 million from sportsbooks, $3.7 million from sports lottery retailers), up an impressive 69.4% from October ($3.5 million) and up 95.8% from November 2019 ($3 million), according to the report.

But the last month of 2020 saw a significant decline because of restrictions related to COVID-19 that went into effect for casinos and other businesses on Dec. 14 and lasted through the month.

The total handle in December was $15.7 million ($8.8 million from sportsbooks, $6.9 million from sports lottery retailers), down 19.5% from November and down 23.3% from December 2019 ($20.5 million).

December’s total revenue of $3.1 million ($1.1 million from sportsbooks, $2 million from sports lottery retailers) was down 47.5% from November ($5.9 million) and up 4.2% from December 2019 ($3 million).

Total Handle in 2020 was $90.2 million

For the state’s year-end sports betting summary, Delaware’s total 2020 handle was $90.2 million ($57.6 million at sportsbooks, $32.6 million at lottery retailers) and total 2020 revenue was $17.1 million ($8.4 million at sportsbooks, $8.7 million at lottery retailers).

State restrictions related to COVID-19 took their toll on the year-over-year sports betting results. In 2019, Delaware had $135.2 million in handle ($102.6 million at sportsbooks, $32.6 million at lottery retailers). Revenue was $19.6 million in 2019 ($12.5 million from sportsbooks, $7.1 million from lottery retailers).

All sports wagering in Delaware occurs in retail environments at the state’s three race track casinos (racinos) — Delaware Park, Dover Downs and Harrington — and at approximately 100 retail outlets, such as convenience stores, liquor stores and restaurants. Mobile sports wagering is legal in Delaware, but it has not been launched yet.

iGaming Numbers Down in November

Delaware iGaming includes Internet casino games and online poker.

In November, the state’s iGaming handle was $16.4 million, down 7.8% from October ($17.8 million) and up 32.5% from November 2019 ($12.4 million). Its iGaming total November revenue was $568,069, down 11.8% from October ($643,714) and up 50.9% from November 2019 ($376,331).

December’s iGaming numbers have not been posted.
