New sports bettors in Illinois will still be able to register online after Gov. JB Pritzker on Friday extended Executive Order 2020-41 that allows remote registration. The latest extension lasts until at least Nov. 14.

Pritzker’s previous executive order would have ended on Saturday. But because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the in-person registration requirement for Illinois sportsbooks has been further suspended, according to the General Assembly website.

Coronvirus cases have spiked in Illinois and Friday the state set a record with 4,554 new cases. That came a day after the previous record of 4,015 new cases.

On July 26, when his original order expired, Pritzker decided not to extend Executive Order 2020-41.

But on Aug. 21 he reinstated the order that suspended the in-person registration requirement. The day before it was set to expire, Sept. 19, he extended it again.

Sports Betting Numbers Strong

Midwest states Indiana and Iowa have set monthly records for total handle in September with the NFL beginning and having NBA, NHL and MLB playoffs to wager on. The numbers have been strong in Illinois. The state hasn’t reported September figures yet, but the August total sports handle in Illinois was $140 million, with 88.5% of that being mobile.

The August handle was up 166.7% from July’s total of $52.5 million. July was the first full month of sports betting and 92% of the handle was online even though in-person registration was back for part of the month.

Betting Options in Illinois Abound

And there are more online options available to Illinois bettors, especially with remote registration allowed.

The William Hill sports betting app on Sept. 16 became the fifth app to go live in Illinois, joining BetRivers, DraftKings, FanDuel and PointsBet. PointsBet went live on Sept. 12.

PointsBet and Hawthorne Race Course on Sept. 30 opened the newest retail sportsbook in Illinois and the closest in-person sports betting operation to Chicago. The Hawthorne sportsbook is the first of four Chicagoland locations — OTBs In Prospect Heights, Oakbrook Terrace and Crestwood — the two companies will open in Illinois.
