Indiana more than doubled its total sports handle in August, seeing a 138% increase month over month.

Indiana sportsbooks had $169,018,238 in total sports handle in August compared to $70,876,622 in July, according to figures released by the state Friday. Sports betting revenue in August was $9,834,881, up 47.7% from July’s $6,658,465.

Although New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Nevada will post their August numbers later this month, in July New Jersey had $315,118,805 in handle, while Pennsylvania saw $164,782,229 and Nevada posted $163,552,029. It’s likely those numbers will rise in August, but Indiana should compare favorably.

The Indiana sports betting market, which celebrated its one-year anniversary Sept. 1, went over $1 billion in total handle during July. Gov. Eric Holcomb placed the first legal wager.

In February, the last full month before the coronavirus pandemic hit, Indiana had a total handle of $187.2 million, a record for the state.

Indiana, like other states with legal sports betting, was helped by the return of major professional sports. MLB started its season July 23 and the NBA and NHL restarted their seasons a week later, giving bettors more opportunities in August.

Numbers should continue to grow with the NFL season in progress. The Indianapolis Colts open their season Sunday at the Jacksonville Jaguars.
