Mobile Makes The Difference in Indiana, Other States

Even though sports and the casinos shut down in mid-March, a strong mobile market allowed Indiana to have some revenue in April and May. Another state in the Midwest — Iowa — showed a rebound in May because of its mobile wagering, as did West Virginia and Oregon, according to figures released this week.

  • Iowa: Total sports betting handle of $6,976,637.22 in May was a 345% increase over April’s $1,568,497. Sports betting revenue of $501,062.16 was a 233% rise over April’s $150,331.
  • West Virginia: The total sports betting handle in May was $4,971,928, up 161.4% from April’s $1,901,658. May sports betting revenue was $541,188, an increase of 366.7% from April’s $115,944.
  • Oregon: The total sports betting handle in May was $7,290,190, an increase of 64.5% over April’s $4,430,648. Sports betting revenue in May was $598,061. That was up 52% over April’s $392,767.

Although the only way for bettors to place wagers in Indiana was via mobile, the state's mobile and online betting market had seen steady growth month-over-month (before the sports world shut down) since mobile betting started in September. March’s mobile total handle was $60,797,614, or 81.3% of the total handle, while February's was $145.89 million or nearly 78% of the total handle.

Casinos Getting Ready to Reopen

Most of Indiana’s 13 state-regulated casinos can reopen June 15 under coronavirus safety plans they submitted to the Indiana Gaming Commission, according to the Associated Press.

“They will all have measures in place to ensure they’re tracking capacity during the course of the gaming day,” Jennifer Reske, the commission’s deputy director, told AP. “We’ve also eliminated any special events — no parties, any type of situation that lends itself to the congregating of a crowd.”

The state's only tribal casino, Four Winds Casino in South Bend, announced June 1 that it also plans to reopen June 15.

More Betting Options in Indiana

On June 1, the gaming commission added Professional Bull Riding and the Premier Lacrosse League to the list of sports that sportsbooks in Indiana can offer wagers on. The commission updated its PGA and LPGA sports betting options on May 18.

”Other” sports again had the most money wagered on in May with major sports mostly shut down. Bets on “other” came to $30,471,917 of the total handle, followed by parlay at $5,134,724. With Korean Baseball a betting option in May, $959,023 was placed on baseball.

With the PGA Tour hosting its first tournament this week, and the NBA, NHL and Major League Soccer looking to conclude their seasons after short training camps, more betting options are on the way.
