Mississippi August Sports Betting Up More Than 400% Over July
Mississippi saw sports betting increase in August and was up 411.4% over July and 103.7% percent over August 2019.
The August sports betting handle was $40,489,135, more than five times the July total of $7,916,665, and more than double last year’s total in August of $19,876,370, according to figures released Wednesday by the state.
It's the second straight month Mississippi has seen an increase of more than 400% in total handle.
The state also saw a big jump in revenue in August. Mississippi had taxable revenue of $3,748,732, up 180.6% from July’s $1,335,762 and up 30% from August 2019’s $2,884,348, according to figures released by the Mississippi Gaming Commission.
The state should see an even bigger increase in September with the NFL and college football seasons underway. It is legal to bet on college sports in Mississippi. But all coastal casinos in Mississippi had to close this week because of Hurricane Sally. Some have started to reopen.

Sports are Back, Casinos are Open
When Mississippi’s 26 commercial casinos — 13 on land and 13 on riverboats — started to reopen in late May after being closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, they did so at 50% capacity.
Sports bettors must place online wagers inside one of the commercial casinos since there is a restriction on mobile sports betting. Most states that have reported August wagering figures saw their handle and revenue more than double from July.
New Jersey announced a U.S record total of $668 million in August, which easily eclipsed the record month for a state. The record was Nevada’s $614.1 million in November 2019.
Basketball was the sport bet on the most in Mississippi in August with about $20 million wagered, nearly half of the month’s total. Baseball almost tripled its July total with about $10 million wagered in August. It was followed by “other” sports at just under $5 million and parlay bets at about $4.6 million.

Mississippi Casinos By the Numbers
Half of the state’s casinos exist in the Mississippi coastal region and they saw the most sports betting handle with $23,144,081 which was nearly five times the total in July of $4,981,243. The revenue in August at the coastal casinos was $2,312,345 compared to July’s $816,346 in revenue.
Northern casinos saw $12,158,042 in handle and $757,045 in revenue. Casinos in the central part of the state had $5,187,011 in handle and $679,341 in revenue.
The August slots drop in Mississippi was $1.824 billion, down 2.5% from July’s $1.871 billion and down 7.4% from August 2019’s $1.969 billion.
The August table games drop was $153.4 million, down 4.4% from July’s $160.4 million and a decrease of 1.5% from August 2019’s $155.7 million.
