MLB Makes Betcris Official Wagering Partner In Latin America

Major League Baseball has been moving toward a full integration of legalized sports betting since the Supreme Court cleared the way for the practice across the United States in 2018.

That march continued this week as gaming operator Betcris became the “official wagering partner” of MLB in Latin America.

As part of the deal announced Thursday, Betcris can use official MLB data, trademarks and logos on its wagering platforms. Among those is a free-to-play mobile app that is currently under development. Betcris will be featured in advertisements during international MLB broadcasts where the company is licensed and regulated, including those airing in Mexico and Panama.

“Partnering with MLB gives us a great competitive edge and reflects the dedicated efforts we have undertaken to be a leader in sports gaming,” Betcris CEO JD Duarte said in a company release. “This partnership will strengthen Betcris’ position in the gaming industry by allowing us to cover all the action in the field and it could not come at a better time.”

Major League Baseball had long opposed gambling in all forms. The game was tarnished by the 1919 Black Sox scandal. All-time hits leaders Pete Rose continues to serve a lifetime ban from the game for illegal bets he made as a player and manager more than 30 years ago. MLB was also a major player in the fight to keep the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) on the books. That law prohibited the growth a legalized sports betting in the U.S. until it was overturned by the Supreme Court two years ago.

Players and team personnel remain prohibited from making any wagers, legal or otherwise.

Move First Into Latin American Betting Market

The partnership with Betcris is a first for MLB into the flourishing Latin American sports betting market. Betcris has not operated in the United States for several years and lists the U.S. as a restricted country where its services are not offered.

“Some of MLB’s most loyal fans reside in Latin America, so it was important to partner with the right gaming operator in the region to engage those passionate fans and also help us reach new audiences,” said Kenny Gersh, Executive Vice President of Gaming and New Business Ventures at Major League Baseball.
