Pennsylvania October Sports Betting Handle Tops $525 Million

Pennsylvania set a new state record for monthly sports wagering handle in October with more than $525.8 million in bets, placed both online and at retail books. That figure eclipsed the previous record of nearly $462.8 million by 13.6%.

With New Jersey announcing a U.S. record $803 million in handle on Nov. 13, and Tuesday’s Pennsylvania total, the two states combined for $1.328 billion in October handle.

Pennsylvania’s 12 casinos with sportsbooks, along with their associated online partners, had revenues totaling $47.8 million and the gross taxable revenue, after subtracting promotional credits, was $36.8 million. Sports betting operators showed promotional credits of $11 million.

As usual, mobile wagering on online Pennsylvania sportsbooks dominated the statistics released Tuesday. In October, mobile betting was 89.8% of the market. October’s online sports betting handle of $472.3 million was up 14% from September’s $414.1 million.

Year-over-year comparisons showed considerable growth as sports wagering expanded in the Keystone State. The exact October handle of $525,802,524 was an increase of 118% from October 2019, when it was $241.2 million.

The most dramatic statistical jump was in taxable gross sports betting revenue. That increased from September’s $6,269,883 to October’s $36,776,926. As a result, the state’s take was $12.5 million in October compared to just $2.1 million in September. Local governments also fared much better, getting $736,000 in October compared with just $125,000 in September.

Barstool Sportsbook 4th in Handle

Among individual operators, the leader was Valley Forge Casino in Montgomery County, just north of Philadelphia, which along with online partner FanDuel accounted for $185 million in handle ($15.6 million in taxable gross revenue). Second was the Meadows casino in western Pennsylvania with partner DraftKings $123.4 million in handle ($6.8 million in taxable gross revenue).

The combined BetRivers entries, Rivers Pittsburgh ($36.1 million) and Rivers Philadelphia ($32.4 million) totaled $68.5 million. Penn National’s Hollywood Casino near Harrisburg with partner Barstool Sports had $63.8 million in handle ($3.4 million in taxable gross revenue). Barstool launched on Sept. 18 in the state.

The rest of the Pennsylvania sportsbooks in order of handle: Parx ($29.9 million), Mount Airy ($29 million), Mohegan ($11.8 million), Presque Isle ($4.8 million), Harrah’s ($3.8 million), South Philadelphia Race & Sports Book ($3.8 million), Mohegan-Lehigh Valley ($2 million).

The casinos showing the largest promotion credit totals were: Valley Forge/FanDuel ($3.1 million), Meadows/DraftKings ($2.3 million) and Hollywood/Barstool ($1.8 million).

Other PA Gaming Numbers Strong

Other key numbers from the October report:

Pennsylvania’s online poker sites saw Mount Airy post revenue of $2,422,505, up slightly from September’s $2,376,045. It was the only online poker site live in October. Retail poker rooms around the state have begun to reopen.

Gross sports betting revenue for October was $36.8 million, up 486.6% from September’s $6.3 million and up 146% from October 2019’s $14.9 million.

Table games revenue was $63.3 million, up 7.1% from September ($59.2 million).

The interactive slots handle in October was $1.1 billion, up 4.6% from September ($1.06 billion).

The October interactive slots gross revenue was $40.3 million, up 1.0% from September ($39.9 million).

The interactive banking tables handle was $1,090,261,589, up 17.6% from September ($926,818,379).

States Surge in Sports Betting Handle

The numbers put up by New Jersey and Pennsylvania continued the strong reports from other states for October:

The sports betting handle in Indiana was $230.9 million, up 11.3% from September’s $207.45 million. Revenue followed suit with adjusted gross revenue for sports wagering hitting an all-time high of $21.1 million, up 47.7% from September’s $14.28 million.

Iowa in October saw its highest total sports betting handle, mobile handle and revenue for a single month, breaking September’s totals. The numbers released from the state on Nov. 9 showed that Iowa recorded $81.9 million in total sports betting handle, up 13.1% from September’s $72.4 million. It was an increase of 76.1% over October 2019’s $40.5 million.
