Rhode Island Breaks Mobile Sports Betting Handle Record

Rhode Island set a state record for mobile sports betting handle in September and nearly reset its total handle record as well.

The Rhode Island sports betting handle via mobile and online devices was $14,091,055, easily breaking August’s mark of $10.4 million — a 27.2% increase — as the state celebrated one year since mobile sports betting was established. The two physical casinos in the state, Twin River and Tiverton, combined for more than $17 million.

That brought the combined total to $31,293,150, nearly breaking the total sports betting handle record for a month. Before the coronavirus pandemic struck, Rhode Island set that record at $31,465,062 in November 2019, then reset it again in December at $31,670,511. The September haul was the highest of 2020, surpassing the $28.1 million recorded in February, according to figures reported by the Rhode Island Lottery on Thursday.

The September total sports betting handle was 35.4% higher than the $23,116,965 posted in August.

That September number was also up 41% from September 2019 ($22,195,789). The Rhode Island sports betting revenue in September was $2,352,788, a 65.3% increase from the $1,423,391 in August but 6.5% lower than in September 2019 ($2,516,060).

National Trend of Rising Sports Betting Handles

September has been a record month for legal, regulated sportsbooks all over the country, adding up to more than $2.4 billion in total handle.

Among the highlights, New Jersey set a national sports betting handle mark at $748.6 million. Nevada had its best month of 2020 in September with $575.1 million. In third place is Pennsylvania, which set a state record with $462.8 million.

Other states breaking their records for sports betting handle in September included Indiana ($207.5 million), Iowa ($72.4M), West Virginia ($77M) and newcomers to legal sports betting in 2020 such as Colorado ($207.6M) and Oregon ($26.1M). Illinois has yet to report its total for the month.

Rhode Island Gaming Up Slightly From August

The Video Lottery Terminal (VLT) net terminal income for Rhode Island in September was $26,410,146, up 7.7% from August ($24,514,805) but down 31.8% from September 2019 ($38,743,416).

It was a similar story with net table games revenue, which rose 5.4% from August’s $5,277,360 to $5,563,362 in September. However, a year-over-year comparison showed a 42.3% decline from the $9,642,214 that the state drew in September 2019.
