Unibet Decides To Move Its 2020 Live Poker Events Online

Unibet will be moving its remaining live poker events for 2020 online.

A poker operator under the brand of the Kindred Group, an all-digital company, Unibet now will have three Unibet Open online events scheduled for the remainder of 2020, according to a news release.

“This is not a decision we have taken lightly,” Unibet Head of Events Nataly Sopacuaperu said in the release. “We fully understand the impact to our partners and the land-based venues, however, as a priority, we must consider not only the health of our customers but also the difficulty for recreational players with regards to planning trips around uncertainty.”

Unibet said it made the decision early not knowing “what the global situation will be in a few months.” It said the move ensures that Unibet Open fans can play an alternative to the live events from the comfort of their homes without losing money on flights or accommodations.

Unibet Series VIII

In March, Unibet made the decision to combine the Unibet Open Tallinn with the Unibet Online Series VIII, creating a $1 million guaranteed series across 132 events beginning May 1 and running until May 24. The champions showdown freeroll is scheduled for May 27. Unibet said Series VIII will be the biggest tournament in its history, over double the size of previous series.

Dates for the fall and winter series, which will be in September and December, respectively, have not been finalized.

“We know some people will be disappointed, the team here certainly is, we love the live events!” Unibet Head of Poker Kristoffer Bergvall said in the news release. “That said, we are all in agreement that this is the best way to ensure the consistency and reliability that people have come to expect from our product, and the online room is better equipped than ever to house our land-based fans.”

In the U.S., online poker sites are legal in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada. Online casino gaming is legal in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
