Washington D.C. Sports Betting Handle Up 28.2% From April
For May, the sports wagering action in Washinton D.C. followed its now familiar pattern. The online version of sports wagering, GambetDC, run by the DC Lottery, trailed the mainly retail operation of the William Hill sportsbook by a wide margin.
In May, William Hill’s handle was about triple that of GambetDC. William Hill has a new permanent sportsbook at the Capital One Arena, home of the NBA Wizards and NHL Capitals. In addition to placing wagers at the William Hill retail sportsbook, bettors can also bet using an app in the building and in a small radius around the arena.
Retail Rules In D.C.
Contrary to D.C., in most jurisdictions where there is both online and retail sports wagering, it’s online wagering that’s the runaway leader.
For May, the total sports betting handle in Washington was almost $13.8 million — $10.67 million from William Hill and $3.1 million from GambetDC. The total handle was up 28.2% from April’s $10.7 million ($8 million from William Hill and $2.7 million from GambetDC).
The May online sports betting gross gaming revenue for William Hill was about $1.4, down 11.6% from April (about $1.6 million). Correspondingly, the May sports betting tax revenue from William Hill was $137,067, down 11.7% from April ($155,147).
There was better news for GambetDC on revenue. The May revenue from GambetDC (amount played minus amount won) was $637,422, up 19.0% from April ($535,772).
Betting At The Ballparks
From the bettors’ perspective, the hold at William Hill was 13.1% and at GambetDC it was 20.5%. BetMGM has launched its sports betting app in Washington, D.C., within a two-block radius of Nationals Park, and that will give bettors another wagering option. The anticipated retail sportsbook at the ballpark hasn't yet opened.
The Nationals and BetMGM Sportsbook announced a partnership agreement in January to put a retail sportsbook at Nationals Park and the mobile app within the permitted area around the stadium. The launch of the online sports betting app was announced earlier this month.
BetMGM is one of the sportsbooks operating in Virginia where, so far, the sports betting is entirely online. Bricks-and-mortar casinos are planned for several cities around the commonwealth but those won’t be coming until 2022 or later.
