West Virginia August Sports Betting Handle Tops $40 Million

West Virginia had its biggest week of sports betting ever in the week ending Aug. 29 with $13.6 million wagered, helping propel the state to $40.4 million in total handle for August.

The record week came after its previous best week of $11.6 million was set the week ending Aug. 22. West Virginia has broken $10 million in total handle for a week four times, with two coming in August.

West Virginia sportsbooks in August had a mobile handle of $31.1 million, up 155% over July’s $15.9 million. August revenue for West Virginia was $1.98 million, an increase of 25.6% over July’s $1.57 million.

And things should get even better for West Virginia in September with the NFL starting and with William Hill launching its sportsbook app and website in West Virginia on Sept. 4. It’s the fourth state where its app is live.

The William Hill sportsbook app in West Virginia is available through a partnership with Mountaineer Casino & Racetrack in New Cumberland.

iGaming Off to Strong Start

August was also a key iGaming month for West Virginia. The iGaming handle was $39.6 million, with revenue of $555,500, in the first full month of iGaming in the state.

West Virginia went live with iGaming in mid-July with DraftKings. DraftKings and BetMGM’s mobile casino products are now active.

BetMGM launched its live casino offerings in the state Aug. 26. BetMGM is partnering with the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. DraftKings entered the state via an agreement with Hollywood Casino at Charles Town.

Online casino gambling and poker are legal in West Virginia, making it one of five states with iGaming options.

West Virginia joined Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware in offering online casino games. Those states plus Nevada offer online poker sites as well. Michigan hopes to offer both online casino and online poker some time in 2020.
