West Virginia December Sports Betting Sees 44.5% Increase

West Virginia’s sports wagering activity showed dramatic gains in December to close the year on a high note.
Sports betting handle was $70.1 million in December, an increase of 44.5% from the previous month when the handle was $48.5 million. It was up 78.7% in a year-to-year comparison with December 2019 when the handle was over $39.2 million. The record for the state is $77 million in September.

December mobile sports betting at top West Virginia sportsbooks was $42.8 million, up 50.6% from November’s $28.4 million and ain increase of 133.8% from December 2019’s $18.3 million. The mobile handle for December also represented increases in previous-month and year-over-year comparisons. Mobile was 61% of the total handle.
Regarding sports betting revenue, the December revenue was $6.5 million, up a solid 46.7% from November’s $4.4 million and up an 178.4% from December 2019’s $2.3 million.
West Virginia computes its sports betting figures weekly rather than monthly. December’s figures represent the period from Nov. 29-Jan. 2. November figures represented Nov. 1-28.

iGaming Up Big in December
For iGaming, the December handle was $109 million, up 50.3% from November’s $72.6 million. Both figures were immense increases from November. The December revenue ($3.1 million) was up 52.2% from November’s $2.1 million.
West Virginia is one of four states that offers house-banked online casino games and peer-to-peer poker. Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey are the others. Nevada offers online poker. Michigan is also looking to soon launch online casino games and online poker.
DraftKings Casino went live in July, partnered with Hollywood Casino at Charles Town. BetMGM and NetEnt have also also gone live, paired with The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs.
Rush Street Interactive announced on Dec. 11 an agreement with Century Casinos to launch online casino at BetRivers.com. Pending licensing and regulatory approvals by the West Virginia Lottery, the online casino launch is set for the second quarter of 2021.
